Avon High Mascot Named After Alumnus

Eli Fisher on hand for ceremony

The eagle mascot was given a name before Friday's game against Vermilion.

He is now Eli the Eagle.

Eli is named after Eli Fisher, a 2011 Avon High graduate. Fisher, the son of Harvey and Marilyn Fisher, is now attending the adult education program at Lorain County Communty College.

The student council voted to name the mascot after Fisher.

"Whener (Eli) comes around, he's always super excited and happy to see everyone," said student council president Quan Tran.

Fisher said he still loves to come to Avon games and is proud to be the mascot's namesake.

"I'm always going to be a part of (Avon High) now," he said.

The school has another eagle in addition to Eli. The student council has adopted a bald eagle at the Lake Erie Science and Nature Center in Bay Village. The eagle, believed to be about 19 years old, was rescued after being found in Michigan with a broken wing.

Avon High is one of three groups that will help share in the cost of feeding and housing the eagle, which is not able to return to the wild.
