Passage of Issue 31 means a new middle school for Avon.

Do you have questions about Issue 31, the Avon Local School District Levy that supports building a new middle school in Avon? If so, you don’t want to miss the last Community Forum on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. The forum, which is open to the public, will be held at the Avon Middle School gym.

“This is our last forum before the election,” Superintendent of Schools Mike Laub said. The format will partially depend on the crowd in attendance.

“There will be a brief overview of the Issue, then a question and answer session.”

Laub said he and other Issue supporters have been continuing to talk to different homeowners’ associations and groups in Avon. The levy is seeking approval of a

“I feel we have reached out to the community,” he said.

Laub said he has appreciated some of the questions regarding the levy, which if passed, will no increase taxes.

“People are asking, ‘what are our plans’ and ‘how are you going to staff (the new building)?” Laub said.

“There is no plan to hire people just because we have space.”

“I’m going to have to hire staff regardless of whether or not we have a new building,” the superintendent said. “Passing this means no increase in tax rate.

“We’re asking people to pay what they’re paying right now, just a little longer.”

Laub noted that more than 3,000 residents have already requested absentee ballots from the county,  but did not know how many of those ballots have been returned.

“We have two weeks to make sure everyone’s questions are answered,” he said.

Please remember when making a decision for/against the School Levy, families purchase homes in cities where there is an exceptional school district. Avon has one right now so think about home values before voting!

That is true, and I completely agree with this no-increase levy. You must also remember, however, that with levies that result in regular increases some long-time residents may no longer be able to afford living in the house they purchased many years ago when the taxes were lower.
