JVS Seeks Smaller Levy, More From Board of Ed

JVS will go after a levy about half the size of this fall's failed levy.

If at first you don’t succeed, try again.

After voters rejected a for the Lorain County Joint Vocational School in last month’s elections, JVS will seek a smaller renewal levy in the March primaries, said Vice President Pam Ohradzansky at Tuesday's board meeting.

“This one is basically half of what we asked for before,” she said. “And it will be for five years, instead of 10.”

Ohradzansky, who also serves on the board at JVS, said the vocational school will seek the renewal levy to cover operating funds, but it’s only part of the approach to balance its books.

“We are looking at ways to tighten our belts,” she said. “But these are funds that are greatly needed.”

More details of the levy will be revealed at next month's board meeting, Ohradzanksy said.

The Board took some other action Tuesday, including:

  • Approving a contract paying Tom Ansell $40 per hour to clean all of the rooms containing the district’s main distribution frame, where all outside electronics connect to the school, and the district’s computer servers. Superintendent Bob Scott said quotes from other consultants were around $80 per hour;
  • Accepting a $2,500 donation from Jason Barnicle and Abigail Amato to the Avon Lake High School wrestling program; and
  • Saying goodbye to board member Greg Palmer, who took part in his last meeting after this fall. He will be replaced by in January.
