Mandatory Meeting For Avon Homecoming Parade Participants

Additional safety measures being taken.

Any group or organization participating in this year’s Sept. 20 Avon Homecoming parade must have one adult representative attend a special meeting at 7 p.m. on  Sept. 13 at the auditorium.

“During this meeting, logistics regarding the parade line up, parking, parade marshals, pick up at the Middle School, candy, etc will be discussed,” a by Avon High School Principal said. The memo said due to increased participation, additional safety measures and planning were necessary.

Groups and organizations must have four adult volunteers to act as parade marshals during the parade.

School officials are only permitting “safe candy” this year. Candy with sticks (lollipops, etc.) will not be allowed. Those not tossing candy appropriately will also be asked to leave the parade.

Avon’s 2012 homecoming theme is Cirque de Avon, a circus-like theme. The parade will depart Avon High School at 6:30 p.m. and conclude at about 7:30 p.m. at

“Anyone who has participated in the parade in the past knows we’ve had concern about our participants unintentionally being mobbed by their adoring fans or worst yet, candy tossed back at them,” Dobos-Buller said in the letter.
