Parade, Powder Puff Game Highlight Homecoming Week

Viva Las Vegas!

That is the theme for Homecoming 2011 dance at the school this weekend.

Prior to the semi-formal dance, Student Council members continue to put the finishing touches on several Homecoming Week events for the students and the community.

Students have been enjoying Spirit Week at the school with designated themes for dressing up including tie-dye, Harry Potter and superhero days.

One of the highlights is the on Thursday.  It will start at 6:30 p.m. at Avon High, head east on Detroit Road to Stoney Ridge Road and finish at Avon Stadium at . The parade features members of the Homecoming Court riding in convertibles, as well as floats made by the students.

A community pep rally commences in the stadium immediately after the parade featuring the band, cheerleaders and football team. The junior and senior class girls will face off in a powder puff football game.

This year’s court is comprised of seniors Angela Conrad, Emily Julius, Meghan McNally, Anne Puzak, Emmary Sharer, Justin O'Rourke, Nick Lee, Ryan Grant, Adam Horrocks, and Matt Holkenborg. The junior attendants are Leah Saur and Chris Pulice. The sophomores are Alexandria Ferrara and Nicholas Varich. Freshmen attendants are Alaia Berdecia and Isiah Pinto.

The senior king and queen will be crowned prior to the football game on Friday night. The undefeated Eagles host Elyria Catholic at 7 p.m.

For the first time at the Homecoming game, the Avon High School Alumni Association will have tents set up at the north and south ends of the stadium to sell mums and gain new members to the association.

The final event for the week is the annual Homecoming Dance on Saturday at Avon High School. This year, the event will be held in the school’s gymnasium.

“We had to move the venue due to occupancy capacity,” Kristina Dobos Buller, Avon High School principal, said. “We can no longer hold the dance in the Commons and now have to move to the main gym. Students will be given a pair of socks to wear during the dance as hard-sole shoes cannot be on the gym floor. We have a very dynamic student council executive board and they are rolling with the transition to the high school gym very well.”

Buller anticipates approximately 1,200 students will attend the dance this year. Many of those are guests of current Avon High School students.

“The question remains under review if Avon will be able to host guests in the future,” she said. “There are about 400 coming this year.”
