Roesky Tournament Hosting 80 Local Teams This Weekend

This marks the 36th year for the event, named after Bob Roesky.

One of Avon Lake’s most enduring traditions, the Bob Roesky -- St. Joseph CYO Basketball Tournament --  continues this year on Feb. 12 at .

The tournament serves as the primary fundraiser for the St. Joseph CYO program and is named in memory of Bob Roesky, a long-time coach and role model for generations of young people. Roesky passed away in 2005 after 44 years of service to the CYO. His wife, June, passed away recently.

is hosting the tournament at the high school using the auxiliary gym as well as the main gym Feb. 12 and13, Feb. 18, 19, 20 and Feb 26 and 27. The tournament has already held one evening of basketball on Jan.  28.

Thom Schumacher, one of the events organizers, said the tournament is expecting a large turnout.

“We have 26 area schools representing about 80 different boys and girls teams grades 4-8 for approximately 190 basketball games, three-point competition, free throw competition, and cheerleading competition,” Schumacher said.

“This is the largest CYO Tournament in the area and is St. Joseph's largest CYO fund raiser.” The tournament will be capped off with the eighth-grade championship games, a 50/50 raffle and an awards ceremony on Feb. 27. 

Teams from the Greater Cleveland area, including Westlake, Avon, Parma, Munson, Lorain and Amherst, will be participating. For more information, go to www.stjosephavonlake.org, and click on the Roesky link for more info.
