Storm Closes Avon Schools (UPDATED)

Schools in are closed on Friday as the latest winter storm slammed the region.

As of 6 a.m., Cleveland TV stations were reporting more than 400 closings of schools and businesses throughout Northeast Ohio. Lorain County Community College is also closed.

The latest winter storm warning from the National Weather Service in Cleveland is set to expire at 4 p.m. Friday. By 3 p.m., the snow had tapered off in Lorain County and skies began to brighten.

The Lorain County Sheriff's Offfice declared a Level 2 Snow Emergency, meaning that driving is extremely hazardous and that you should stay off the roads if at all possible.

In spite of that, the Lorain County 911 scanner reported multiple cases of cars off the road in Avon, especially on Interstate 90 and Nagel Road.

Jerry Plas, director of in Avon, said that the main roads in Avon were clear and just wet since noon. The department was tackling secondary roads and subdivisions by mid-afternoon, he said.

"We should have the city clear by 8 or 9 p.m.," Plas said.

With schools closed, so are all after-school activities at Avon Local Schools including the Heritage Hoopla basketball game between staff at and elementary schools. The game has not yet been rescheduled, school officials reported Friday morning.

boys basketball games at Bay scheduled for Friday night have been postponed until Saturday. The JV game will be at 2 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 3:30.

The  Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) orchestra competition at  scheduled for Friday and Saturday, in which Avon High's orchestras were set to compete, has been cancelled.

Singles Connect, scheduled for Friday evening at , has been cancelled. A new date will be announced.
