You Said It: Brother Remembers Fallen Vietnam Marine David Schneider

Rich Schneider leads Pledge of Allegiance at Avon High assembly

annual Veterans Day assembly featured a short history lesson of veterans, a presenting of the colors, and a family who suffered the ultimate war loss.

Some siblings of Marine Corporal David F. Schneider, who was killed in the Vietnam War, were on hand. David Schneider grew up with his 7 sisters and four brothers in Avon. The family home was near where the water tower stands today.

Cpl. Schneider died on Feb. 14, 1968, in Quang Tri Province in what was South Vietnam. He stepped on a landmine and was killed. 

He was one of two Avon natives to die in Vietnam. Army Sargeant Patrick Smith died Nov. 26, 1968, after the helicopter he was being evacuated in after being wounded was fired on and crashed in Tay Ninh, South Vietnam.

Representatives from in Avon Lake presented the colors and provided a bagpiper. They also presented military ballcaps to Schneider's brother, Rich, and three Avon teachers who are veterans.

Legion member Al Pina made a presentation on veterans throughout American history, covering subjects such as what happened at Pearl Harbor, the women on the homefront during World War II, and the battle that inspired Francis Scott Key to write "The Star-Spangled Banner."
