Avon Lake Girl's Cross Country Laying the Cornerstones

Young team features only one senior.

If youth is a foundation on which to build, the Avon Lake High School Girl’s Cross Country team is ready to lay the cornerstones.

The Shoregals finished fourth in the team race for the 2012 Southwestern Conference Championship with only one senior running on the varsity seven.   Freshmen Allie Spensley (20.32.3), Julia Jantz (21.16.1) and Audrey Spensley (21.56.3) finished 1st, 2nd and 4th for the Shoregal team. They also finished as three of the top four freshmen in the entire SWC on Lorain County Community College’s rugged course.

Senior Annie Wennerberg (21.30.7), junior Jessica Lambert (22.00.8), sophomore Katey Faber (22.49.8) and iunior Marissa Gerrone (23.44.7) completed the varsity team. Brecksville won the girls team title.

The Avon Lake junior varsity team finished second in the JV team race to Brecksville. Sophomore Charlotte Ward (22.19.6) led the Shoregals.   Sophomores Ashley Mandel (22.45.2) and Abby Francy (22.47.0), seniors Anna Knight (22.56.8) and Megan Novotny (23.22.4), freshman Mary McGrail (23.23.9) and junior Caroline Popiel (23.51.1) made up the junior varsity squad.     

The Division I District race is Saturday at Lorain County Community College.
