'Hooks For Hunger' is Avon Lake's First Fishing Tournament

July 6 Lake Erie tournament will benefit CRS.

Anglers can spend a day trying to reel in the big one, all while helping one of Avon and Avon Lake’s largest assistance programs, with the first city-sponsored fishing tournament.

Hooks for Hunger on Saturday, July 6 will give area afishanados a day on the water, a chance to win prizes, a shore lunch and potential bragging rights all while helping Community Resource Services (CRS).

Avon Lake service department foreman Ed Moran said the city’s recreation director, Gary Gerrone, had created a list of potential events to help promote the city and get residents active, one of which was a charter boat starting at Miller Road Park.

“I thought about it and thought a fishing tournament might be better,“ Moran said. “I stole the name from Hoops for Hunger.” Hoops for Hunger was created by ALHS basketball player Molly Disbrow, which raised more than $1,600 for Community Resource Services (CRS).

“It makes money for CRS; it’s a good cause and a good organization,” Moran said. The tournament will run from 6 a.m. – 2 p.m. followed by a barbecue style lunch/dinner at the west end of Miller Road Park in newly acquired city property. The actual sign in will be at Miller Road,” Moran said, “But fisherman can go out of Lorain and sign in at Miller. “It’s also a good way to promoted the city, lake and fellowship.”

Tournament goers will have a chance to reel in Walleye, which are in close during July. Moran said he’s expecting between 14 and 30 boats for the Lake Erie event. In the event it rains, the rain date will be the next day, on Sunday.

“I’m expecting boats from Rocky River to Vermilion and Lorain,” Moran said. Prizes will be from local businesses. The cost is $25 per person (not boat) and while there is no limit for individuals on a boat, the vessel can only have a maximum of six lines. Participants can keep the fish they catch.

"After, there will be a light dinner, like burgers, hotdogs,” Moran said. “I expect we’ll be out of there between 5 and 6 p.m. There will be door prizes and a 50/50 raffle.
