Pool Readies for First Fishing Derby

150 sign up to try to catch a rainbow trout.

For the first time ever, the Ellen Trivanovich Aquatic Center will be home to a new breed of swimmer...in the form of rainbow trout.

Sponsored by the Avon Lake Recreation Department, the pool, now free of chemicals, will be filled with hundreds of trout for the first Youth Fishing Derby, Saturday, Sept. 29 starting at 9 a.m.

The fish will arrive this Thursday.

Youthful anglers - age 5 - 12, will be trying their hands at catching one, or more, of these freshwater beauties. Currently, the 150 maximum slots are full, residents can still apply for the waiting list.

"It filled so fast, we didn't advertise it much," Recreation Director Gary Gerrone said.

If you've made the list, a working rod and reel with at least 50’ of line, a hook, and a bobber are necessary – as is a cooler or creel for the big catch.Bait will be available on site. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Division of Wildlife will be on hand to present a short fishing seminar before the bait hits the water (and the fish hit the bait).

Fish filleting service will be available on-site, and the pool's concession stand will be open for business.
