The Avon Lake Shoregals volleyball team, after besting Elyria 25-10, 25-15, 25-17, on Oct. 23 at the Grafton District Semi-Final, will aim for the District championships tonight at Midview High School, hoping to defend their 2011 District title against Brunswick.
Currently, the Shoregals, with a 19-5 record, are ranked No. 18 in the state.
“They were very focused tonight,” Coach Dan Berkheimer told the Chronicle-Telegram. “We played very clean. I don’t think we had a passing error or a hitting error until the third game.”
Avon Lake played a clean series with only four unforced errors on Tuesday.
Isabelle Wagner led the Shoregals with 10 kills. Christine Bohan had eights, Katie Mihalik seven, Lauren Bakaitis six and Whitney Craigo five. Craigo also added 30 assists.
Bohan led the Shoregals’ serving with four aces.
“Bohan really found her serve at the end there,” Berkheimer told the Morning Journal. “She was struggling a little bit, but then she found it. When she’s got that topspin going, everybody has trouble.”
Starting time for Thursday’s championship is 7:30 p.m.
The winner between Avon Lake and Brunswick on Thursday night will head to Brecksville-Broadview Heights on Nov. 1 in the Norwalk Regional Semifinal against the winner of North Royalton and Strongsville.
