Shoremen, Eagles Football Earn Academic All Ohio Honors

Only 20 of 718 Ohio football teams earned honors

The Ohio High School Football Coaches Association named the 2012 Avon Lake Shoremen and Avon Eagles football teams as Academic All Ohio. Only 20 of the 718 football programs throughout the state were recognized for this prestigious award. 

To qualify, the GPAs of the top 22 lettermen were averaged and ranked.

Avon Lake finished with a 3.73 accumulated GPA and ranked second, behind Kings High School. The Shoremen also received this award in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Avon High School ranked eighth overall.

The Ohio High School Football Coaches Association recognizes individuals as academic all Ohio.

To qualify, the nominee must have senior standing, must be recognized as a first team selection at the all conference, all county or all district level in addition to demonstrating academic distinction with a grade point average of 3.60 or better.

More than 100 athletes from over 30,000 players in Ohio were honored. 

Representing Avon were Kevin Skotko and Alex Kelly. Avon Lake’s representatives were wide receiver Jimmy Hessel, defensive back Joe Pappas and offensive lineman Bill Hyland.
