Shoremen "Three-Peat" With Third-Straight SWC Championship

Girls take fourth place, Learwood offers two first-place finishers.

The state-ranked Shoremen Cross Country team continued to make history in the mud and water of the LCCC cross county course last Saturday. For the third year in a row, Coach Rob Juergens has guided the Shoremen to double victories winning both the varsity and junior varsity Southwestern Conference Championship races.

Avon Lake High School is the first team to earn that SWC accomplishment since 1965.

The Shoremen harriers placed five runners in the top 13 spots, scoring 39 points to Brecksville’s 52 points, North Olmsted (95), Amherst (127), Olmsted Falls (128), Berea (139), Midpark (175) and Westlake (189). This is the third year the Shoremen beat for the Bees for the SWC title.

In one of the closer finishes in SWC history, senior Trevor Norris nearly captured the SWC crown just missing by fractions of a second. In 2009 and 2010, Avon Lake runners (Matt Link and  Mike Parsons, respectively) ran to SWC individual championships.

Norris’ second place was followed by Connor Musial (7), Francesco Maiorca (8), Tom Parsons (9) and Michael Callesen (13). Sophomore’s Nick Nix and Devin Arora finished 20 and 22 placing all seven Shoremen in the top 22 spots in a field of 56 runners.

The JV Shoremen won in convincing style with sophomore Jared Shelar and senior Leon Kinsely placing first and second in a field of more than 100 runners. They were closely followed by Trent Glasser, Jon O’Donnell, Dan Luca, A.J. McManaman and Michael Luca.

Shoregals take fourth at SWC

With senior Katie Link recovering from an injury, the girls finished fourth in the SWC.  Link had won the individual championship twice running for the Shoregals in previous years. The Shoregals were led by Annie Wennerberg (15), followed by Link (17), Katey Faber (24), Jessica Lambert (25), Jane Duskey (29), Charlotte Ward (33) and Marisa Gerrone (37).

Learwood runners earn double victory

Avon Lake was well represented by eighth-graders Julia Jantz and Patrick Shulte who accomplished a double victory for Avon Lake by winning their respective junior high races.

Shulte led the Learwood team to a third-place finish followed by Brandon Baiers, Robert Hoffman, Alexander Holtz, George Vasiloff, Ricky Krause and Josh Beachnau.

Jantz led the Learwood girls junior high team to a fourth-place finish in the SWC with a field of 136 runners.  She was followed by teammates Allie Spensley, Rachel Cogar, Juliana Dotson, Audrey Spensley, Sarah Lucas, and Shaye McManaman.

The Shoremen and Shoregals compete at the District meet next on Saturday, Oct. 22 at LCCC.
