Three Avon Lake Grapplers Eye States

St. Edward High School dominates, as expected

As expected, the Lorain Sectional Tournament was dominated by St. Edward, as the Eagles not only scored 327.5 points, more than 100 points above runner-up Elyria, but they sent its entire roster into District action, which will be held on the same Lorain High mats next weekend.

While tallied 47 points, three of its grapplers still have hopes alive of reaching the coveted goal of winning a state medal in Columbus.

Leading the way was the Shoremen's Cory Frank, who won the SWC title a week prior. The senior standout made it into championship match, before falling to top seed Greg Kuhar of St. Edward to take home second place honors.

Prior to that match, Frank reigned supreme, as he downed Elyria's TJ Halstead via pin in 4:49 and also Westlake's Alex Busser in just 1:21.

Caleb Rojek (171 )also had a nice tournament and earned a berth into district action after a disappointing SWC tourney where he had to default in the finals due to a buckled knee.

Rojek downed Westlake's Pat Hertl 12-5, then lost his next match 8-3 to John Marshall's John Austin. Rojek's next match was one of the more exciting of 171, and he bounced back with an exciting 3-1 win over Elyria's Anthony Ellis. He then fell to Lorain's John Findley in the championship consolation match 9-4, but like Frank advanced into District action.

Matt Sokolow (189) placed fifth in the tournament.  After falling to Olmsted Falls Jeremy Roig in his first match, he bounced back with a pin over Westlake's Mo Muntaser in 2:24. He then fell to Lorain's Alex Medina, before taking home the fifth place crown with a pin of John Marshall's Dominique Dickerson.

Also competing for the Shoremen were Jimmy Emerson (152),  DJ Murdock (135) and Alex Washburn (215) who didn't place, but still competed well.
