A Corn Festival, Beer Tasting and Italian Feast on Tap for the Weekend

Looking for things to do this weekend? Food, beer, corn and classic cars are highlighted for the weekend.

We’re still in the throes of summer so we’ve rounded up a few choice items for you to do this weekend starting with the ever-popular North Ridgeville Corn Festival. Here’s the Pick Six for the weekend:

NORTH RIDGEVILLE CORN FESTIVAL

Where/When: City Hall, 7307 Avon Belden Rd, North Ridgeville / Friday through Sunday

Why go: The 37th Annual North Ridgeville Corn Festival will feature a corn eating contest, music, food, rides, games, arts and crafts, a parade, a car show and of course, corn. The popular Lorain County tradition will include fireworks Friday night, a 10K/5K run Saturday morning and a cornhole tournament Sunday afternoon. The festival was voted one of the best in Lorain County by Pulse Magazine.

FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION

Where/When: Mayfield Road in Little Italy, Cleveland

Why Go: Even if you’re not Italian you’ll love the Feast of the Assumption in Cleveland’s Little Italy. This mostly outdoor festival, now in its 113th year, makes scrumptious Italian fare and the procession of the Virgin Mary statue through the neighborhood the main attraction. Rides, entertainment and booths are in abundance. The festia runs 6 p.m. – midnight on Friday, noon – midnight on Saturday and noon – 11 p.m. on Sunday and Monday

BEER TASTING FEATURING GOOSE ISLAND BREWING COMPANY

Where/When: , 26179 Detroit Road, Westlake / 7-9 p.m. Friday

Why go: Are you tired of liquor? A beer afficianado?  will be hosting a beer tasting, pouring seven beers and pairing them with cheeses. Goose Island Brewing Company, based out of Chicago, will be the featured brand. The cost is $10 and requires an RSVP at 440-892-7096.

CREATURE COMFORTS/ANIMAL ENRICHMENT DAY

Where/When: Cleveland Metroparks Zoo/ 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (activities until 4 p.m.) Saturday

Why go: From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the day is packed with exciting activities at the zoo. According to the zoo’s website, “guests may observe primates being challenged to use tools, big cats stalking papier mâché prey [and] an octopus solving a puzzle.” Feedings, shows and crafts will both entertain and educate your kids on exotic wildlife and house pets alike. Don’t miss this big event!

Where/When: , 37711 Detroit Rd, Avon / 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday

Why go: Wheels for Wags is a classic car show to benefit the Friendship APL of Lorain County. All makes and models are welcome. There is a $10 donation to enter a car; spectators are free. Awards given out include Mayor's choice and dash plaques for the first 100 cars. Oldies music will be provided by DJ Al Pinecki. Food, root beer floats, door prizes, raffles, contests, demonstrations and vendors will be on hand as will animals for adoption from the APL and doggie contests. There's plenty for kids too so bring the family and your dog (on a leash) and enjoy a walk down memory lane.

CINEMA AT THE SQUARE: SUPERMAN

Where/When: Playhouse Square, Palace Theatre / 2 p.m. Sunday

Why go: Come see this classic film in Palace Theatre downtown for only $5. Superman is part of a series running through Aug. 21 called Cinema at the Square, so check out the site to see what other movies are playing, including Jaws and Spiderman.
