Avon Lake Kiwanis Members Volunteer at Kids in Flight

Five members of the Avon Lake Kiwanis Club and one spouse spent June 22 volunteering at Burke Lakefront Airport, helping make a day extra special for children who are facing serious illnesses.

The non-profit organization celebrated, Kids In Flight, its 10th anniversary on Saturday sending a record number of children—and their families—on airplane rides, enjoying a complimentary lunch and enjoying an afternoon that included face painting, balloons, a raffle and music.

Founded in 2003, Kids in Flight uses aviation-related activities and airplane rides to give children with serious illnesses or disabilities an opportunity to escape by “soaring above their crises, complications and struggles.”

This year, more than 120 children, along with several hundred family members, participated with kids and family having a chance to fly in a small plane.

In addition to the activities, guests were able to meet Captain America, an 8-foot moonwalker, Ronald McDonald and a number of clowns.

Attendees also got to see and hop into a number of aviation vehicles including MetroHealth’s Life Flight, the Cleveland Police helicopter, a B-52 bomber, a United jet and a number of emergency vehicles.

Volunteering for the Avon Lake Kiwanis Club were President-Elect Dorothy Henderson, Russ Henderson, Jack Kinsner, Lori Switaj, Eileen Wozniak and Wozniak’s husband, Don.
