Family, Activities the Focus of Avon Lake's Pack 334

Expect to see the familiar blue Scouting outfits at numerous fall events in Avon Lake, as Cub Scout Pack 334 gears up for its fall drive—and activities.

‘You will see us in uniform at both the Homecoming and Memorial Day Parades,” Den leader and Leadership Committee member Scott Danniger said.  “We perform Color Guard duties at some of the ( basketball games. And we participate in food and clothing collections throughout the year as well.”

September is also a big month for the pack.

“Our first campout is a ‘Welcome to Scouting’ campout,” Danniger said. “It is held at Walker Road Park in September. We will begin with a Fishing Derby, after we eat, we will have a presentation from the French Creek Nature Center.  We will have a campfire where a Boy Scout troop will entertain us and provide snow cones.  In the morning, we will have a nice hot breakfast, clean up and be home in time to watch the football games.”

The Pack will host an information night on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. at Redwood Elementary School.

“Right now we have about 65 Cub scouts in the Pack,” Danniger said. “Our fifth-graders crossed over last February to become Boy Scouts. We anticipate having about 100 scouts once our new first graders begin signing up.”

The active Pack hosts four campouts a year and monthly Pack meetings with a focus on the family.  

“Almost all of our outings and activities are family oriented,” Danniger said of the Pack, which is led by Cub Master T.J. Worsencroft. “That means mom and dad, brothers and sisters are welcome to join us and participate with us on campouts and other activities.  We do have an occasional activity which is ‘Scout Only.’" 

Similar to Avon’s Pack 333, Scouting has a solid purpose.

“Apart from the fun and excitement, the aim of Cub Scouting is to help boys grow into good citizens who are strong in character and personally fit,” Danniger said. “This is why we say that Cub Scouting is fun with a purpose.”

Pack 334, understanding that many Scouts participate in additional activities, hold enough events that if a boy has to miss an event, it is not critical.

Pack 334 primarily recruits from and Redwood elementary schools, but no boy will be turned away. Dens are organized by school and grade, with one Den for each grade at each school, allowing boys to be in a Den with boys they know from school. Several activities are held each year that include all Dens.

Scouting is open to all boys from first grade until the Scouts 18th birthday.
