Operation Write Home at Library Saturday

Stop in and craft a blank card for an overseas soldier.

Since Sandy Allnock founded Operation Write Home in 2007, the non-profit organization has grown from its initial sending of 1,000 cards to soldiers, to more than one million.

The organization supports the U.S. Armed Forces by sending blank handmade greeting cards for soldiers to use and send to loved ones. Now, Avon Lakers can easily participate.

“Ashley McAllise, president of our Friends of ALPL came across this national organization and is also an avid ‘card maker,’" spokesperson Jill Ralston said of the project.

In the spring of 2010 the 1,000,000-card milestone was passed nationally and the library is helping keep the project going.

Area residents can participate on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Avon Lake Public Library for an hour or two between 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. to create a variety of greeting cards. Card making supplies will be available, but card makers can feel free to bring supplies to share. Shipping of cards is provided.

“Our soldiers don't have the luxury of popping in a or to pick up a birthday card for their child or an anniversary card for their spouse,” Ralston said. “Operation Write Home gives them that.”
