Health & Fitness

It's Almost Here.

It's bright and early on Thursday morning.  This time tomorrow Opening Ceremonies will be happening.  There will be a mix of happiness and sadness.  We, as walkers, are happy that the day is finally here.  A year of fundraising and training will reach fruition.  We are also sad because this is the last Komen 3 Day to be held in Cleveland.  The cost to mount one of these events has gotten to be too much and the number of walkers has greatly declined.  When I first walked three years ago we had almost 2,000 walkers.  This year there will be about 700.  And we still don't have a cure for breast cancer.

Today will be spent doing last minute preparations, like doing laundry and packing my clothes, looking over the checklist one more time to make sure I have everything.  Hat. Check.  Camera.  Check.  Sunscreen. Check.  Tent decorations.  Check.  Air mattress.  Check.  I will also just spend some time relaxing and head to bed early.  Everything starts tomorrow morning at Dock 32 at the Cleveland Port Authority at 5 A.M.

Remember, if you see us walking, honk and wave.  Acknowledge us.  If you know someone walking and you haven't made a donation, it's not too late.  Go to the3day.org and make a donation.  You can donate for 90 after the walk.  Every little bit helps.  Come to a Cheer Station and cheer everyone on.  Give a breast cancer survivor or someone undergoing treatment a hug.  If at all possible though, make a donation.  Help us fund a cure.  Lets get rid of this disease.  No man or woman deserves to suffer through it.

I hope to be able to post to this blog throughout the walk.  We usually have computer access thanks to one of our wonderful sponsors.  If I can't, then I will update you on Sunday after Closing Ceremonies.

Get out there and cheer these walkers on.  Sixty miles is a lot of walking.  I am including a picture taken when I crossed the finish line my first walk.  The lady with me is known as 'The Hug Lady."  She hugs each and every one of us as we leave every day and when we reach camp and the finish line.
