Expanded Walmart Opening, Summer Events and Sherrod Brown Leaving

Five things you need to know this week.

  • Expanded Walmart opening on Friday
The expanded Walmart in Avon will unveil changes Friday, Aug. 2, after a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The expanded store at 35901 Chester Road is will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • The Back-to-School Barbeque is Saturday
The Aug. 3 BBQ is from 4 p.m. - sunset at Veteran Memorial Park (SR 83 & Lake Rd) in Avon Lake. Bring the fam and enjoy bounce houses and slides, games and prizes, face painting, balloon twister, food from Avon Lake businesses. The Kiwanis Club will be hosting their Annual School Supply Drive to benefit CRS and the Avon Lake Early Childhood PTA group is hosting a membership drive.   • Shoremen Brass Classic on Saturday
Also Saturday, the second-annual Shoremen Brass Classic Drum Corps International (DCI) competition is scheduled to begin at 6  p.m. on Aug. 3 at Avon Lake High School's Memorial Stadium, and tickets are now on sale.

  • Crushers 5.5 out of first place
The Lake Erie Crushers are heading into the week 31-28 with a .525 winning average. They are 5.5 games out of first place in the East Division, where they are currently in fourth place. The next home game at All-Pro Stadium is Wednesday, July 31 against the Washington Wild Things. 
  • Names in the news: Sherrod Brown, Connie Schulz leaving Avon

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown and his wife, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Connie Schultz, are bidding farewell to Avon, according  to The Plain Dealer. The couple live in the Mill Creek subdivision and are planning to relocate to Cleveland.
