<p>The Avon Lake Police Department maintains a staff of 45 personnel. This includes one police chief, four lieutenants, four sergeants, one detective/sergeant, four detectives, 20 patrol officers, four full-time and five part-time dispatchers, one administrative secretary and an animal warden.</p>
<p>The department also staffs one K-9, Kimba. Several members serve on the county S.W.A.T. team.The department maintains a water and bike patrol, a motorcycle patrol, a K-9 unit and a School Resource Officer with an office at the high school. Officers are involved in the Lorain County Tactical Team and the Lorain County Drug Task Force. The department has watercraft for patrol and rescue including a police boat and a pair of jet skis shared with the Avon Lake Fire Department.</p> <p>The department maintains an Honor Guard and hosts a popular community police program that allows residents to complete a hands-on course to learn how the department works. Despite the relatively small size of the department, the department, in addition to normal police duties, is very involved in community and county-wide services.</p> <p>The police often provide safety tips and participates in community events, including the annual "Big Trucks" community events that allows residents to get up close and personal with safety vehicles.The department is located at the city's Safety Center on Walker Road. The newer facility houses several jail cells and a state-of-the-art communication system.</p> <p>The department operates under Poice Chief David Owad and is under the jurisdiction of the mayor, who serves as the Safety Director.</p>
