The devastating tornado that rocked Oklahoma on Monday leaves many wondering how to help — even from hundreds of miles away in Avon and Avon Lake. Patch is about helping your neighbors, and today after the devastation near Oklahoma City where a giant tornado claimed the lives of at least 51 people, including many children, Oklahoma is our neighbor. Avon, Avon Lake Residents' Recycling Options Expand

Now residents can recycle nearly all bottles and milk and juice containers

Republic Services, the waste management company that services Avon and Avon Lake, has expanded its recycling program, the Sun News reports. The company will now accept Nos. 1 to 7 food, beverage, soap and detergent containers, as well as "aseptic" milk and juice containers — those with plastic coatings. Previously, the company only took Nos. 1 and 2, and no asaeptic containers. Click here for recycling tips from the Lorain County Solid Waste Management District. Getting Out Before the Storm

Did you get rain today? Or did it miss?

Avon Lake photographer Bob Quinlan snapped this photo of boaters trying to get their boats out at Miller Road Park before the rains came. Prior to the storm, dark clouds--and thunder--rolled into the area. Parts of Avon Lake received some welcome rain after 12:30 p.m. today. Meanwhile, residents in Avon reported they received "not one drop." The storm lasted maybe 15 minutes. See something of interest? Add it to our pics & clips gallery.

Man OD’s on Heroin, Friends Drop Him off at Clinic: Blotters

Also in the blotters: Man says Girl Scouts harassed him.

The following information was pulled from the Avon Police log. Information does not indicate an arrest or conviction. On May 10, a man in his mid-20s was dropped off at the Cleveland Clinic unconscious. His friends said he overdosed on heroin and Xanax but did not stay. Avon police put out a request to find the friends and obtain additional information. A friend finally ID’d the man, who was treated at the Clinic. His  family in Avon Lake was notified. An update on the man’s condition was not available at deadline.  Also in the blotters: Man says Girl Scouts harassed him. A man entering Walmart in Avon called police claiming he was harassed. The incident happened on May 11 after a man signaled to Girl Scouts who had set up a booth that he …

Authorities Looking for Fugitive Wanted for Murder During Dice Game

The Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force is offering a reward for information which would lead to the capture of fugitive Demetrice Cannon.

Demetrice Cannon, 28, is wanted by the U.S. Marshals and the Cleveland Police for aggravated murder. It is alleged that Cannon shot and killed a man after an argument during a dice game, according to a press release. The incident took place earlier this month on May 2. Cannon is a black male standing approximately 5’05” and weighing 150 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. Cannon is suspected to be hiding out somewhere in the Cleveland area. He also had a previous address near the 1200 block of E. 80th St. in Cleveland. 5 Avon Student-Athletes Make College Sports Committments

Student-athletes will participate in golf, basketball, track and cheerleading.

Five Avon High School seniors declared their college selections at a May 15 ceremony at the school. Athletic director Erich Frombach said the five were part of a group of 17 Avon seniors who will go to participate in college athletics. He said the group exemplified student-athletes. “I was amazed to see not only were they successful athletically, but academically  successful in life,”  said. “Academics play a huge role. “There’s way more money in academics than athletics.” Frombach said the five students maintained adjusted GPAs of 3.9, 3.8, 3.8, 3.6 and 3.5.
