There were lots of hot topics in the news this week, and three of our bloggers chose to tackle them with their own opinions of the situations. Here's what they had to say about these current events: 1. Blogger Laura Madsen explains how a trip to McDonald's forever changed the lives of several people. Do you think the discovery of Michelle, Gina and Amanda was divine intervention? 2. Mom blogger Melissa Winger explains why she will no longer shop at Abercrombie & Fitch and how appalled she was at the CEO's message to girls and women.  3. Another mom blogger, Devone, writes that it's getting harder to teach girls that they are more than just a pretty face, especially with how skimpy girls clothing is becoming. Her rant was also inspired by …

20 Avon Lake Homes Affected After Water Main Break May 15

Parts of Ashwood Drive under water. One driveway, parts of street damaged.

Residents of Ashwood Drive found their street under water May 15, despite the dry weather after a water main break between Electric and Redwood boulevards. Avon Lake Municipal Utilities representative said that at approximately 7 p.m. last night, power surges in Avon Lake caused pressure fluctuations at Avon Lake Municipal Utilities’ Water Filtration Plant. The stutter effect caused a break in the 50-year old water main on Ashwood Drive between Electric and Redwood, affecting approximately 20 homes. Being so close to the filtration/pumping station, the water was coming out very quickly. The break was fixed in 3 and a half hours. ALMU engineers did not speculate the quantity of water lost. A resident’s driveway and part of Ashwood Drive …

Retiring at 50: Could You Follow This Woman's Extreme Savings Plan?

Here's the story of Marlene Konkoly, who found creative ways to spend less and save more so she can retire at 50. This story is the first in our series about Extreme Savers.

Americans may be living longer, but our retirement plans aren’t keeping up. Which means people are living longer with smaller bank accounts. But Marlene Konkoly will retire at age 50. How did she do it? She contributes a whopping 45 percent of the gross annual income she earns as a procurement officer for an automotive finance company to her retirement—all while owning a home and remaining debt-free. Konkoly is actually well ahead of the retirement savings curve compared to many of her fellow Americans. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, fewer than half of Americans even know how much money they would need to retire. And nearly a third of employees who had access to a defined contribution plan such as a 401(k) did not participate …
