Marian C. Smitek, 90, Retired Social Worker

Native of Grafton

Marian C. (Noveski) Smitek, 90, died May 16. Smitek was born Dec. 5, 1921, in Grafton. She lived in Avon for 60 years. She worked as a social worker for Catholic Social Services and was a member of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church. Smitek is survived by her son, Michael Smitek of North Ridgeville, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband Paul "Frank" Smitek, son Frank J. "Frankie" Smitek, and brothers Thomas and Joseph Noveski. Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, May 21, at Misencik Funeral Home. Beverly A. Vasil (nee Hunt), 71, of Avon, passed away on May 2, 2012. She was born on July 16, 1940. She is the beloved wife of Andrew; loving mother of Elizabeth, Michael (Kimberly), David (Lisa); devoted grandmother of Jacob, Cory, and Kaitlin; dear sister in law of Jack Sheehan; preceded in death by her parents Robert and Florence (nee Grau) Hunt and siblings, Barbara Sheehan and Thomas Hunt. John Fox, 1974 Graduate of Avon High School

Passed away following a truck accident.

John F. Fox, age 55, passed away April 25, 2012 following a truck accident off I-65 in Bullitt County, KY. Mr. Fox was born on May 16, 2012 in Bay Village and graduated from Avon High School in 1974. He lived in Sheffield Lake and worked at Nordson prior to his enlistment in the U.S. Marine Corp. from 1975-1979 and continued to work for Nordson until he retired in 2007. Most recently he was working as truckdriver for Valley Transportation in Ashland.  He is survived by his wife of 29 years Elizabeth (nee Kmett) Fox, son John F. Fox II, granddaughter McKinzie A. John B. Root, 80, Served in Navy

John B. Root, 80 of Avon Lake, formerly of Omaha, NE passed away on April 25, 2012 at Main Street Care Center following a lengthy illness. John was born on March 29, 1932 in Mansfield, OH. He served in the Navy and graduated from Ashland University. John worked for 20 years as an accountant with Eaton Corporation in the Airflex Division. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Lorain and the American Legion. John loved reading, sports and spending time at home with his family. Mary G. (Nagel) Morahan, 82, of Avon, died at home surrounded by her family on April 19. Morahan was a lifetime Avon resident and graduated from St. Theresa Academy in Cleveland. In addition to being a wife, mother and homemaker, Morahan was also heavily involved in the Avon community. She was a very active lifelong member of Holy Trinity Church and the Ladies Guild. She was a member at the VFW in Elyria and the American Legion in Avon Lake. Her interests included crocheting blankets for her grandchildren, ceramics, gardening and canning. Clara "Claire" (Mayo) Curley, 76, of Avon died April 19. She was born in Cleveland on Dec. 7, 1935, to Carl and Mary Grace Mayo. She was a loving wife to late husband James Curley for 50 years. Thomas Martin Wagner, 55, of Avon died April 12. Wagner was born Feb. 4, 1957, in Toledo and was a 1975 graduate of E.L. Bowsher High School. He earned his bachelor's degree in communications from the University of Toledo in 1980 and his associate's degree from the Insurance Institute in 1987. Wagner was vice-president of business development for Elevated Sale, Inc. Wagner loved being a father and husband. His other interests included tennis, his church, travel and yard work. Vandals Hit Local Church, Home

The following arrest information was provided by the Avon Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Avon police are working with area schools to try and identify possible suspects after the pavilion and outdoor tables at Faith Lutheran Church were reported vandalized on March 25. Some of the writings were “We are Wear,” “Smoke Rings Territory” and the initials “MLG.” Church officials told police they believe the vandalism occurred either late Friday night or early Saturday morning. On March 24, a resident nearby in the 2200 block of Garden Drive had “MLG” painted in yellow paint on her garage door.

Anthony J. "A.J." Bodnar Jr., 24, of Avon, died March 12 in Lorain. He is survived by his parents, Anthony J. Bodnar Sr. and Maria (Dolcemascola); brothers Domonic and Vincent; grandparents James (Mikie) Bodnar and David (Lee) Dolcemascola; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Seeing such a young age in an obituary is hard. Avon High Class of 2011 graduate Alexis Taylor died on March 8 at the age of 18. The Lorain County Coroner's Office said Sunday that the cause of death is undetermined. Calling hours are from  2 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Busch Funeral Home.  A private family service will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Busch Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery.
