Friday event included speakers who witnessed bombings.
Students, community members and city workers came out May 10 to show their support for Boston--and especially those injured in the Boston Marathon bombings April 15. The event featured speakers, luminaries and green T-shirts everywhere as well as an Avon Fire Department truck displaying a large American flag. “It went well,” Avon High School teacher Collin Henderson, who organized the event with Mike Cooper, said. “We were very happy with the turnout.” A rainy Friday night might have affected the turnout for the event, which was originally scheduled for the Avon Middle School stadium. Inclement weather caused a change of venue to the middle school gym. “It was our first rodeo,” Henderson said. “If we had to do it over, I wish we had a …

Narrow victory of levy results in comments, cheers and concerns.
The passage of Issue 10 by a 52 percent margin means a good portion of the community is breathing a sigh of relief, but almost half are frustrated. Passage of the 10-year levy will result in a tax increase of $253.58 for every $100,000 of home valuation. “Avon Lake City Schools has to say ‘thank you,’” Superintendent of Schools Bob Scott said on Tuesday night, immediately following the election. “I’ve been here 8 years and they’ve been so supportive the whole time. We’re in a really tough situation right now and have been for a couple of years. This vote is saying not just how important education is to the kids, but the community itself.” Scott said the district has known for awhile how difficult the cuts from the state would be and wanted…

Westview Principal Paul Holland keeps his side of a bet and nine students give him a shearing.
It's not every day you get to take the scissors to the principal’s head. But for nine third and fourth-grade students at Westview Elementary School in Avon Lake, studying hard for the state Ohio Achievement Assessment tests paid off when they were picked to give the school’s principal, Paul Holland, a haircut. As a reward for the students’ hard work and to provide an incentive, Holland, who famously allowed himself to get duct taped to the gym wall last year, promised the students could cut his hair if they studied hard. On May 3, Holland kept that promise and handed over first scissors, then clippers to the students who required less than half an hour to complete a commendable hack job on the principal’s longish hair after chanting, “…
