To the Editor: The school levy appearing on the May ballot is very important to me as a grandfather. Two of my grandchildren are in the elementary grades and two of them are high school students. The older grandchild is taking advantage of the AP and dual credit courses. The younger high school student is looking at taking those courses in the next few years. To the Editor: DeWitt Jones is a noted photographer who says it’s important to “Celebrate What’s Right in the World.” He does so by sharing the moments he captures through the lens of his camera. My wife Stacy and I love to take pictures too and we certainly celebrate what’s right in our life with these images. If we point the lens of our camera on the community here in Avon Lake, our schools come into focus. Stacy took a picture of our daughter once as she was thrusting her French horn in …

Look through our gallery of Ohio celebrities who came to life at Holy Trinity.
Ohio celebrities, or at least their imitators, came to life April 23 at the second Holy Trinity School Wax Museum. More than 50 students recreated Ohio celebrities, including numerous Cleveland natives (such as Avon's own Pulitzer Prize winner, Connie Schultz). The list includes actors, comediens, a multitude of sports figures, astronauts, a chef and one Miss America. Pushing a "button" on the floor in front of each wax figure (each of which remained lifeless until the button was pushed), activated the figure who gavea a bio of the celebrits including ties to Ohio, why he/she is famour, interesting facts and major events in their lives. Students chose a wide breadth of celebrities including Katie Holmes, Woody Hayes, Michael Symon, Les …

School Board President Chuck Froehlich says Columbus funding, growing district adds to financial squeeze.
Editor’s note: This letter is part of a group of 5 letters from Avon Lake Board of Education members. The letters are in support of Issue 10, a 10-year emergency levy will generate $6.5 million per year at a cost of $253.58 per $100,000 home valuation. The purpose of the Avon Lake School Levy Issue 10 is to 1) replace funding diverted to other districts and charter school thanks to lawmakers in Columbus, and 2) restore the loss of tax revenue resulting from the reduction in electricity generated and inevitable closure of the GenOn power plant. The “simple solutions” recently proposed by knowledgeable citizens to solve our District’s financial problems are perplexing. For over 20 years our elected officials in Columbus have failed to …

The burden must be shared by these other groups as well in order for the Avon Lake schools to continue to be solvent and strong. The Board of Education who represent the voters …   more ›

Dr. Joanie Walker first principal in Ohio to earn honor twice.
Avon Lake High School Principal Dr. Joanie Walker made history last week after being named the 2013-14 Ohio High School Principal of the Year by the Ohio Association of Secondary School Administrators (OASSA). It is the second time Walker has earned the honor, making her the only principal in the state to win the award twice. She earned the honor in 2006, when she was the principal of Bedford High School. “This time it’s special because I can celebrate with the staff and students,” Walker said. Walker was hired by Avon Lake in 2006 soon after she won the first time. The OASSA, in conjunction with Metlife and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, awards one principal a year the honor after reviewing tenure, data and …
