Support CRS while watching the Lake Erie Crushers take on the Normal CornBelters at All-Pro Freight Stadium. Student-athletes will participate in golf, basketball, track and cheerleading.
Five Avon High School seniors declared their college selections at a May 15 ceremony at the school. Athletic director Erich Frombach said the five were part of a group of 17 Avon seniors who will go to participate in college athletics. He said the group exemplified student-athletes. “I was amazed to see not only were they successful athletically, but academically successful in life,” said. “Academics play a huge role. “There’s way more money in academics than athletics.” Frombach said the five students maintained adjusted GPAs of 3.9, 3.8, 3.8, 3.6 and 3.5. The Eagles' offensive tackle will be getting some attention his senior season.
Avon Eagles' senior Walter Rauterkus will have a little extra pressure on him during the 2014 football season. The offensive tackle has already received a scholarship offer to play for the West Virginia Mountaineers, according to Scout.com. That offer has put Rauterkus on the recruiting map for schools next season, the website reports. For second year, race will start at Avon High School.
The streets of Avon will be filled with runners and walkers for the Kaiser Permanente 13th Annual Eagle Run on Saturday, May 25. More than 1,000 runners and walkers are anticipated to participate in this year’s event held Memorial Day Weekend. For the second consecutive year, the race will start at Avon High School. Runners and walkers can begin registering at 7:15 a.m. Registration is now open online. "We anticipate a record turnout for this years Eagle Run,” Chris Carroll, a spokesperson for the race said. “Over the last 13 years, as the City of Avon has grown so has the participation in the Eagle Run. Girls make up one of the smartest basketball teams in Ohio.
The Avon High School girls basketball teams was named one of the top five smartest varsity girls basketball teams in the state of Ohio. The team was recognized on May 10. The team maintains a collective GPA of more than 3.8. For their efforts, the team was recognized by the Ohio National Guard who presented an award to the Eagles. The girls went 14-10 overall this past season (9-4) conference with a state ranking of 352. In February, the varsity Lady Eagles beat the Avon Lake Lady Shoregals in basketball on Feb. 23, overcoming a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to sneak by the Shoregals in non-league play. The team advanced to the district semifinals and where there season ended after a loss Magnificat High School on Feb. 27.

Batter up, kids! The Cleveland Indians is offering a summer camp for children ages 6-14 in eight area suburbs, including Avon. Each camp cosists of two 2-hour sessions and will take a comprehensive approach to teaching the game of baseball. Summer Camp instructors will focus on throwing, catching, fielding, hitting and base running, according to a prepared statement. Five members of the Fr. Reagan Council in Avon won, LBA donates $400 to Camp Imagine.
Five local bowlers from Avon and Avon Lake were team winners in this year’s Catholic Knight of Columbus tournament, held at Beaver Vu Lanes in Dayton. The tournament was held during the first three weekends in March. Teams and individuals participated from throughout Ohio. The event was comprised of an individual event, a doubles event and a team event. The team was led by captain Steve Kimmel from Avon Lake and the Fr. Reagan Council in Avon. The team, made up of bowlers from the Thursday night league at Spevock’s Nautical Lanes in Avon Lake, consists of Kimmel, Mark “Koondog” Konya, Fran Tibbitts, Dennis Zakutny and John Schrift. U-11 travel team went 4-0 last weekend.
The Avon Lake Lightning under-11 girls travel soccer team went 4-0 last weekend, winning the Bowling Green Spring Soccer Challenge tournament. The tournament, hosted at Bowling Green State University, attracts more than 400 teams from Canada and the U.S. The Lightning is comprised of girls that attend Troy Intermediate School. The Lightning won all three of their preliminary games to earn a spot in the championship game. Battling a persistent rain and soggy conditions on Sunday, the girls defeated a team from Greater Toledo Football Club by a score of 4-1 to win the championship trophy for their age division. Paul Jordan earns gold, Shepard earns bronze in brown belt.
Paul Jordan, head instructor and owner of Chu To Bu/Brasa Judo, Jiu Jitsu and MMA in Avon, competed in the Men's Masters Black Belt Division recently, earning a gold medal despite being out of competition for almost a decade. Jordan who has focused the last 10 years building, instructing and coaching at his judo club has not competed since 2003. Last weekend he made a successful return. He is currently ranked in the Master's Division. Also medaling was Sheffield Lake's Kyle Shepard who won the bronze medal in the brown belt 100+ kg division.
