5 Players Facing Suspensions Over Harlem Shake YouTube Video

In-school and game suspensions issued.

Editor's note: Comments will require editorial approval before being posted on the site. A video posted on YouTube has resulted in in-school and game suspensions for five Avon Lake High School baseball players. Superintendent Bob Scott had said earlier this week that the students could face discipline from the athletic office in addition to scholastic discipline. Scott said 18 JV and varsity players were identified in the video, which shows some of them simulating sex acts as Harlem Shake plays. “Five players were identified as being inappropriate,” Scott said. The five will receive up to three days of in school suspension and up to two game suspensions. Scott said the baseball team will also be doing community service. The team opens the …

Crushers Pitcher Tapped for 2013 World Baseball Classic

Right-hander Eric Gonzalez-Diaz pitched against some of Major League Baseball's biggest stars while playing on team Spain in the international baseball tournament.

Lake Erie Crushers' right-hander Eric Gonzalez-Diaz had quite the off-season after being tapped to play for Spain in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. Spain was eliminated after the first round March 10, but Gonzalez-Diaz earned the opportunity to pitch against some of Major League Baseball's biggest all-stars, like: Miguel Cabrera, Yadier Molina, Pablo Sandoval and Elvis Andrus, said Crushers' radio announcer Andy Barch in a press release. “It was an amazing experience for me,” said Gonzalez-Diaz in a prepared statement.  “I learned that if you make good pitches, you can get anybody out, but if you make mistakes, especially against the guys I faced, they’re going to make you pay. As I get ready for the 2013 season, knowing that I faced a …

Residents Voice Concern, Indifference Over 'Harlem Shake' Incident

Avon Lake Patch readers took to the comment boards to either support or chastise the Avon Lake High School boys' baseball team over its risque YouTube dance video.

Avon Lake High School officials said disciplinary action would be handed down to several members of the boys' baseball team who posted a vulgar "Harlem Shake" video on YouTube last week. The 30-second video opens with about a dozen members of the team readying for play, while one dressed student simulates a sex act on a trash can. After approximately 15 seconds, the entire team is featured dancing, some in compromising positions and some simply dancing.  The video was taken down March 11 as soon as the school was notified. Several Patch readers took to the comment boards to either support or chastise the risque video. Here's what they had to say: Mitch Eichler: Shame on them for having fun and disgracing the always golden Avon Lake High …

Maybe all of the haters would rather they had stolen a car, crammed it full of kids and wrapped it around a pole! Give me a break; these kids did nothing wrong. We should be ashamed of ourselves for allowing this generation to become exposed to all the immoral television, politicians, and athletes. We created this.   more ›

Future Looks Bright for Avon Lake Boys Basketball Team

The on-court accomplishments of the junior varsity team suggest good days lie ahead for the high school program.

The future looks bright for the Avon Lake Shoremen boys' basketball team, especially in light of its junior varsity successes this past season. "The first half of the season saw the young Shoremen start out 5-5 as they experienced growing pains adapting to each other and the JV experience; however, the boys caught their wind in the second half going 8-4, including a very exciting game at the “Q” where they fell to a half-second buzzer-beater by Strongsville," according to Avon Lake High School Athletic Department press release. The Shoremen finished in second place at 13-9, with a 9-4 record in the Southwest Conference (SWC). Kevin Fitch, who willed his team to victory with an up-tempo offense coupled with a high-pressure defense, was …

Is 13 and 9 promising? Add a collapse by the Varsity who was up 14 entering the 4th in another opening playoff loss, and the freshman team that dribbles with their heads down it looks like more of the same. Thank god for Shoremen Football.   more ›
