Crushers Pitcher Tapped for 2013 World Baseball Classic

Right-hander Eric Gonzalez-Diaz pitched against some of Major League Baseball's biggest stars while playing on team Spain in the international baseball tournament.

Lake Erie Crushers' right-hander Eric Gonzalez-Diaz had quite the off-season after being tapped to play for Spain in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. Spain was eliminated after the first round March 10, but Gonzalez-Diaz earned the opportunity to pitch against some of Major League Baseball's biggest all-stars, like: Miguel Cabrera, Yadier Molina, Pablo Sandoval and Elvis Andrus, said Crushers' radio announcer Andy Barch in a press release. “It was an amazing experience for me,” said Gonzalez-Diaz in a prepared statement.  “I learned that if you make good pitches, you can get anybody out, but if you make mistakes, especially against the guys I faced, they’re going to make you pay. Lake Erie Crushers opening at All Pro Freight Stadium on Friday.

Play ball! The Avon-based Lake Erie Crushers are ready for the May 18 season opener at the 5,000-seat All Pro Freight Stadium. The stadium lights, one of which fell last winter, have been repaired and are operable. The team has been practicing since spring training started and the marketing department has announced the team’s first promotion. City May Spend $500K for Stadium Light Towers

Light towers to be installed at All Pro Freight Stadium before Lake Erie Crushers open season in May

The Lake Erie Crushers season starts next month. And the City of Avon has one goal for the start of baseball season. "We want people watching the game, not the light towers," said law director John Gasior. The city is replacing all eight light towers at All Pro Freight Stadium after one came down in high winds in December, crashing down on the picnic patio above the seats on the third-base side of the stadium. The new light towers are expected to begin arriving at the stadium by April 16, and installation is expected to be finished by May 10, said city finance director Bill Logan. City Council will vote in next Monday's meeting about appropriating $425,000 towards paying for the installation of the lights. The money would come from both …

City to Pay Schools for Lost Stadium Revenue

Money lost when state declared All Pro Freight Stadium tax-exempt

Avon Local Schools will get more than $43,000 from the city to make up for revenue lost after All Pro Freight Stadium was given tax-exempt status by the state last year. City council unanimously approved Monday night a voluntary payment of $43,811.72 to the school district. The stadium got tax-exempt status after Senate Bill 71 was passed. Before that, only stadiums that had teams affiliated with Major League Franchises were tax-exempt. The Lake Erie Crushers, like all other Frontier League teams, are independent and unaffiliated. The ordinances passed authorizing the payment only applies to this one payment. Also at the meeting, council approved advertising for bids to repave Avon Road. This work would only happen if Avon Road is re-…

The towers were all down late last week. Council approved reappropriating $125,000 in city money for the project. The money will be used towards engineering work and for hiring a general contractor. Work needs to begin soon in order for the light towers to be either repaired or replaced by the May 18 opening of the Lake Erie Crushers season. Money May Be Set Aside for Stadium Light Poles

City needs to get moving on project

The city may appropriate $125,000 towards getting started on fixing the light poles at All Pro Freight Stadium. Law director John Gasior said at Tuesday's work session of Avon City Council getting started as soon as possible is imperative if the light poles are to be repaired by May. That's when the Lake Erie Crushers season opens, and also when the stadium hosts the Mid-American Conference baseball tournament. "We have to get people working on this, but we can't get them working without contracts," Gasior said. "This is the city stepping up and saying we'll get the ball rolling." A light pole came crashing down on the picnic plaza at the stadium in December. An inspection revealed three more light poles may have similar problems. Finance …
