Do you want to volunteer at Ames Family Hospice House?
Several local residents have volunteered to participate in the 2013 National Day of Service on Saturday, Jan. 19, by helping hospice patients and their families at Ames Family Hospice House. At the hospice house, community residents will host a homemade soup luncheon for patients, families, caregivers and visitors in the Great Room, and will create handmade cards to give to veterans being cared for by Hospice of the Western Reserve. Residents in Avon, Avon Lake and Westlake are invited to volunteer. Ames Family Hospice is seeking new volunteers and will be starting education classes soon. Avon, Avon Lake vets welcome to flag-raising ceremony.
Local veterans and their families are invited to attend a flag-raising ceremony on the 30-acre grounds at Ames Family Hospice House, 30800 Hospice Way, Westlake, on Veterans Day, Sunday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. The ceremony will take place in the large Veterans Garden located in front of the house. Spokesperson Laurie Heinrichsen said veterans from Avon and Avon Lake are welcome to attend the ceremony. American Legion Post 12 from Elyria will be donating a new 4 x 6 foot flag to wave from atop the 30-foot flagpole located in the center of the garden and will perform a ceremony honoring the memory of all who have lost their lives in service to the county. Community will get to see facility that helps both the living and the dying
At Hospice of the Western Reserve's new Ames Family Hospice in Westlake, the motto is, you're living until you die. Everything from the design of the building to colors chosen is focused on giving patients and their families the most living possible out of the final days of the patient's life. "We want them to feel like they're in a home, not a facility," said Robert Plona, director of residential services. The new 40,000-sq.-ft. hospice opens this weekend with events that include a community open house from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 23.
