Don't Fear the Librarian: Get Half Off Fines

Avon Branch Library wants you to return overdue books

Have you found an overdue library book during your spring cleaning? If you have overdue books, or owe fines to Avon Branch Library, April is the month to settle your accounts. Bring your overdue books or other library items like DVDs or books on tape to any Lorain Public Library System branch and you will get 50 percent off your fines. Do you owe fines on previously returned items? Those are half-off too. This offer is only good until April 30. So do another sweep of the kids' rooms to be sure you found all the overdue stuff.

Avon's city council meets at 7:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall. Council will vote on reappropriations to get repairs started on the light towers at All Pro Freight Stadium, and moving forward with police and fire levies. Basketball, Theater and Zumba: Five Things

What's going on this weekend?

There might be some shoveling in your plans, as Avon is under a Winter Weather Advisory on Friday and may get up to six inches of snow. Avon High's boys and girls basketball teams host Midview this weekend. The boys play at 7:30 p.m. Friday and the girls at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $3 to each game. Want to see a show, but not into what's playing at the movies? Go see the Broadway classic, "The Fantasticks," at TrueNorth Cultural Arts. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday. Want more theater? Then go to Clague Playhouse in Westlake for "See Rock City."  If you need a jump-start for your "I'm going to exercise more" New Year's resolution, Avon Branch Library is hosting a free Zumba class at 12:15 Saturday.

If you've put off getting your Christmas tree, there's still time and plenty of options around Avon and Lorain County. Avon City Council will meet for a work session at 7:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall. One of the topics up for discussion will be a plan for "Bulk Week" for picking up recyclables, bulk waste and yard waste. If you have a library book do this week, get it to the Avon Branch Library by Friday. It's closed Saturday through Dec. 27. There will also be no Bookmobile service. Even after Saturday's snow, the odds are not looking good for a white Christmas. Temperatures go into the 40s for the middle of the week with rain in the forecast for Wednesday. Monday is Columbus Day. Avon schools are open. City, county, state and federal government offices are closed. Avon City Council's meeting is moved to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. If you want to vote in November's election, Tuesday is the deadline to register to vote. The Lorain County Board of Elections office will be open until 9 p.m. on Tuesday to accept registrations. Thinking about fall housecleaning? Get some help in clearing out the clutter with a de-cluttering program at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Avon Branch Library.
