Princesses Galore at Drama Club Fundraiser

Fairy tales come to life for guests

Who needs the "D-word" place when you can hang with princesses right here in Avon? Meet the Princesses is a family-friendly fundraiser for Avon High's Drama Club. It will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 5. Children can meet their favorite fairy-tale princes and princesses, enjoy snacks, face-painting, photos with the characters, and a performance. Tickets are $15 and are available at Avon Cafe. The event was the idea of Drama Club secretary Laurel Plzak. "I never got over my love of princesses," she said. Plzak is directing the show and is also playing her favorite princess, Rapunzel. She'll put extensions into her already long blond hair to look the part. Plzak is helping the princes and princesses stay in character by giving them character …

Avon High "Kontrol Freaks" Place 45th in Regional Robotics Competition (Video)

The students said even though everything that could have gone wrong did, they learned a lot.

Who knew March mayhem made its way to Cleveland this year? The popular college basketball tournament seemed like the most appropriate comparison for the 11th annual Buckeye Regional FIRST Robotics Competition that invaded Cleveland State University’s Wolstein Center Thursday through Saturday. It produced the same brand of buzzer-beating jump shots, bracket-style matchups, exuberant cheering sections, dancing mascots and speakers that blared LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem.” Instead of skilled college students taking the court, the FIRST competition featured 59 robots sinking basketball shots and wowing a packed stadium. High school students from Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland and Canada controlled the robots with the use of joysticks …

Avon High Drum Line Wins State Title

Group puts on quite a show

Avon High School's Drum Line percussion group captured its first Ohio Indoor Performance State Championship last weekend. The group has been in existence since 2005, said director Bryan Hoersten. Marching band members came back from competitions and told of the drum lines they saw, and suggested that Avon start one. "What's impressive is that, out of the 17 members, only three of them started out in music on drums," he said. The other members came from playing other instruments in Avon High's music program, Hoersten said. Some have only been playing percussion since the start of the school year when they joined drum line. "Not only do they have to learn this new instrument," Hoersten said, "but they have to do it while learning a …

Students Create Business for Good Cause

Money raised will help two schoolmates

Avon High's Junior Achievement students are taking care of business, and their friends. Their business project this year is Hashtag Tees, a t-shirt business. One shirt says "#avonswag," the other says "#weareavon." For those unfamiliar with social media, the hashtag or "#" is used on Twitter to designate a topic people can find tweets by. This year, 100 percent of the profits generated by sales of the t-shirts will be given to the families of Avon High students Kelly Aston and Scott Scarvelli. Aston is recovering from a stroke, and Scarvelli was paralyzed in a 2011 motocross accident. That made things a little different for the Junior Achievement students than raising funds for charity. "We know who they are and we want to support them," …

Avon High Student In Trouble After Threat

Student wrote threat on bathroom wall

An Avon High School student is facing punishment after being accused of writing a threat on a bathroom wall on Tuesday, the school reported Wednesday. The graffiti was reported to school officials Tuesday afternoon, principal Kristina Dobos Buller said in an email sent to parents on Wednesday. This is the second time since the Chardon shootings on Feb. 27 that an Avon Local Schools student has been caught making what are called threats "to induce panic." An Avon Middle School student was overheard making threats on March 1 and was turned in to school officials. The Plain Dealer is reporting that the unidentified student in Tuesday's incident has been suspended and could face expulsion. No charges had been filed as of Wednesday.

I hope this is just an issue of stupidity and not at actual threat. So many kids think this is funny and don't really mean it. The problem is that the ones who do will try to make good. They need love, help and attention and hopefully they'll get what they need.   more ›
