Student-athletes will participate in golf, basketball, track and cheerleading.
Five Avon High School seniors declared their college selections at a May 15 ceremony at the school. Athletic director Erich Frombach said the five were part of a group of 17 Avon seniors who will go to participate in college athletics. The Eagles' offensive tackle will be getting some attention his senior season.
Avon Eagles' senior Walter Rauterkus will have a little extra pressure on him during the 2014 football season. The offensive tackle has already received a scholarship offer to play for the West Virginia Mountaineers, according to Scout.com. That offer has put Rauterkus on the recruiting map for schools next season, the website reports. He is "one of the more unknown linemen in Ohio for the class of 2014, but he is starting to see interest rise in the past month." READ MORE HERE

Avon Lake is the 22nd best high school in Ohio, according to the annual rankings prepared by U.S. News & World Report. Avon was ranked 77th in the state and 1,405th in the nation. Avon Lake finished 543rd nationally and recieved the silver medal. It fared well in participation in Advanced Placement courses (44.1 percent). Students are also 97 percent proficient in reading and 93 percent proficient in math, according to the magazine. Avon recieved the silver medal and was praised for its participation rate (25.7 percent) in Advanced Placement courses. Avon finished fourth ahead of fifth-place Avon Lake for the boys.
Both the Avon Eagles and Avon Lake Shoremen boys track teams had a strong showing at Saturday's Avon Lake Invitational. Avon had a fourth-place finish while Avon Lake came in fifth. The Shoremen girls came in seventh followed by the ninth-place Lady Eagles. The Avon 4X400 meter team of Brentten Wiley, Nick Telidis, Nick Varich and John DeMarco ended the meet with a second-place finish at 3:37 seconds. DeMarco nabbed first in the boys 400 meter dash as well at 52.67 seconds. The Eagles 4X200 meter team of Brentten Wiley, Jake Bitter, Antonio Orr and DeMarco finished first with a time of 1:33. There is no reason that our purportedly excellent teachers cannot continue to teach the core competencies effectively despite a failed levy. The message should not be Save Our Schools; it should be Save Our Homes. The levy amount is NOT affordable for a large share of residents given the dire economic times which persist.
