Zilka transitions from council president to Avon Lake mayor on Jan. 1
Mayor-elect Greg Zilka will take the Oath of Office on Friday, Dec. 30. His four-year term as mayor officially begins at midnight at Jan. 1, 2012, however, he can be sworn in beforehand. Avon Lake Municipal Court Judge Darrel Bilancini will administer the oath at Ahern’s Banquet Center. State Rep. Matthew Lundy will act as the master of ceremonies for the event and Richard Turner will provide the invocation followed by remarks by Zilka. The event is not open to the public. Zilka expressed regret that the size of the venue would prevent it from being a public event. “It’s important to be sworn in before,” Zilka said, noting that circumstances beyond one’s control, such as a blizzard, could prevent a swearing in Jan. The ceremony will be …

Do you support the need for a runoff election? Take our poll.
Following the release of the cost of a mayoral run off election scheduled for Dec. 6, Avon Lake Patch received numerous inquiries and comments about why there is a run off election. On Nov. 8, a three-way race for mayor concluded without any one candidate earning more than 50 percent of the vote. Per the city’s charter, the two highest vote getters in a mayoral election when no candidate receives more than 50 percent of yes votes—this year being Greg Zilka and K.C. Zuber—will face off in a run-off election. That rule went into effect Nov. 6, 2001, the day Avon Lake voters unanimously approved a charter change requiring a mayor cannot be elected without a majority vote. In that General Election 4,981 voters, (81 percent) supported the …

Berner is only candidate discussing financial situation of city.
To the Editor: Why is Rob Berner the only mayoral candidate talking about the financial situation of the city? Both Mayor Zuber and Council President Zilka have been claiming to be fiscally responsible and guiding the city through tough economic times. Yet, in 2008 the city’s general fund spent $15.2 million and only collected $14.6 million. In 2010 they spend $14.2 million and only collected $13.5 million. The 2011 general fund budget has $14.7 million in expenses and only $13.5 million in revenues. Income tax collections went from $10 million in 2007 to $7.8 million in 2010. They claim to be fiscally responsible while doing nothing to keep spending in line with revenues. When asked about what they will do with the pending loses of …

Now, instead of committing libel and using misinformation (which was leveled at me as a personal attack), I would like to share my concerns about our city government. Understand that, this is not to disrespect you, as your comments were to me, but only to voice my political opinion. About the candidates that are "working" for you as you state: One of the issues about the busy candidates you speak…   more ›
