POLL: Will You Vote For a New Middle School?

Vote on Issue 11 is Tuesday

After all the talking, forums and comments, the decision on whether or not to build a new Avon Middle School comes down to Tuesday's vote. Voters will decide on Issue 11, a 32-year, $32-million bond issue to build a new middle school. If passsed, the bond issue would cost homeowners an additional $38.29 per year for every $100,000 in home valuation. The bond issue was defeated by less than 200 votes -- 3,903 to 3,726 -- in the Nov. 8 election. Supporters of the levy had stated that building new is the most cost-effective way of dealing with a growing student population. Those who are opposed say the cost is just too high and adding onto the existing middle school is enough. How are you feeling about Issue 11? Have you been persuaded by the…

Wow. Hopefully, your boss doesn't feel that way about you and your family members. I guess they should eat cake? I was saddened to see the levy fail - but that is why it is put to a vote - majority rules and we accept the outcome.... but will continue to find ways to improve our city and school system.   more ›

Threat Reported at Avon Middle School

School sends out alert to parents

Here is the text of an email sent by Avon Middle School on Thursday evening: "At approximately 1:15 p.m. today (Thursday, March 1, 2012) it was reported to the AMS Office by two staff members that a student made a comment in a classroom that was considered a threat to induce panic. Pursuant of Avon Board of Education Policy and the law, the student and the situation were dealt with in an appropriate manner. "At Avon Middle School the safety and the security of students and staff are our top priority. Through practicing emergency drills and promoting a positive safe school environment, we strive to make sure that every student and staff member is safe in our facility and at school-related events. We will continue to engage in our safety …

Push for New Middle School Reaches Final Days

Last public forum before election covers school bond issue, levy

Alternatives to building a new Avon Middle School are short-term solutions that could hurt the Avon Local School District in the long run, several people at the final public forum before the March 6 primary said. Issue 11, a $32 million bond issue to build a new middle school, and Issue 12, a combining of two existing operating levies into one 10-year, $2.5 million levy, were discussed at the forum. Avon Middle School social studies Jennifer O'Leary said the levy support committee should show, rather than tell, the effects of the crowding in the middle school. "They should show a video  of what it's like between classes or at lunch," she said. "Or what 35 desks in a classroom looks like. Or how small our library is going to be after we …

We need a new Middle School. Both of my children have already attended and left the Middle School when the class sizes were smaller - it was crowded then. Over the past few years the school system has tried to update the media capabilities, but the structure itself is TOO SMALL for our city. Avon has grown dramatically in the past 20 years. I cannot imagine the crowding with the students now. …   more ›

Support School Bond Issue, Levy: Letter

Resident supports Issues 11 and 12 based on school district's record

Avon is an outstanding community with an exceptional school district. The Avon Local School District spends less money per student than any other public school district in the State of Ohio. In short, the District continually does more with less. It provides a high-quality education to its students and spends less than the other 612 public school districts in Ohio. At the same time, the community continues to experience tremendous growth. Thus, the District is at a critical juncture. It has two vitally important issues on the ballot on Tuesday, March 6. Issue 11 is a bond issue for the construction of a new middle school which will alleviate severe overcrowding at the current middle school. The cost to each homeowner is minimal ($3.19 a …

Levy Support Committee Readying for Home Stretch

Middle school bond issue, renewal levy up for March 6 vote.

Members of Support Avon Schools, the levy support committee, are getting ready for the last weeks before the March 6 primary, where two school-related votes are on the agenda. Members met this week to talk about what they're doing to support the passage of both issues. Signs have been delivered and will be distributed over the next several days, said school board member Scott Radcliffe. Mailings, along with the Avon Avenues district newsletter, will be going out to residents in the weeks leading up to the election. Many of the estimated 120 members of the levy support committee have been attending school events and parent meetings to talk up support for both issues. A public forum to discuss and answer questions about both issues is at 7 p…

Does Avon Need a New Middle School? Take Our Poll

Vote is less than a month away

After a 32-year, $32-million bond issue to build a new middle school suffered a narrow defeat in the November election, it was put back on the ballot for the March 6 primary vote. There was a public forum to discuss the bond issue on Monday, but attendance was sparse. Another forum is set for Feb. 22 at Avon Middle School. Where do you stand on the idea of building a new middle school? The district has said that building new not only makes good sense economically, but will help solve crowding issues at Heritage North and Heritage South, and free up the existing middle school for the students at Village. Cast your vote in our poll and share your views in the comments. While there are many who know they either support or oppose it, there are…

I am appalled at the lack of community support for the school system in the City of Avon. So much so, that our family is seriously considering moving out of Avon because of that lack of support. I don't think I want my daughter in Avon Schools. There is more to excellence than test scores. A new building is necessary. Overcrowded, outdated buildings are not only unsafe, they are not conducive to …   more ›

Is a New Middle School Really Necessary?

That was the question of the night at a forum to discuss school levies

Avon's board of education and supporters of the $32 million bond issue to build a new middle school aren't reaching all the voters, said some who attended Monday's forum on the bond issue and the renewal levy that are on the March 6 ballot. Gregory Levan, an Avenbury Lakes resident, said there needed to be more in-person outreach to older residents. "They need to have the facts and numbers right there in front of them," he said, urging board members and levy supporters to set up a forum in his development to talk with residents. "The biggest problem the school board and the district have is communicating with all the residents." Treasurer Kent Zeman and board member Heather Mahoney agreed that would be a good idea, as well as connecting …

Bring Your Middle School Levy Questions to Forum

Two school levies up for March 6 vote

Avon has two school issues to vote on in the March 6 primary election. The $32-million bond issue to build a new middle school is one, and a renewal operating levy is the other. Do you have questions about them? Are you unconvinced either for or against a new middle school? You have a chance to get your questions answered and your concerns heard. The first of two public forums to discuss the issues will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Avon Middle School. The middle school bond issue is for $32 million over 32 years, at 2.25 mills. It would cost a homeowner an additional $38.29 per year for every $100,000 in home valuation. The renewal levy is two levies combined into one. Middle School Bond Issue Going on March Ballot

Some at meeting angry over no public comment before vote

The $32 million bond issue to build a new Avon Middle School will be on the March primary ballot after the Board of Education approved it at a special meeting Wednesday at Heritage North. The bond issue was defeated by less than 200 votes -- 3,903 to 3,726 -- in the Nov. 8 election. Ohio's primary election is March 6, 2012. In order to be on that ballot, the bond issue must be filed with the Lorain County Board of Elections by Dec. 7. The bond issue would cost homeowners an additional $38.29 per year for every $100,000 in home valuation. Some residents who came to the meeting were angry that there was no opportunity for public comment or discussion before the vote. Former superintendent Bob Barnhardt said after the vote and before the …

Nick, you are right $12m is a lot but a new school provides more flexibility for the school district and would reduce long term operating costs compared to the alternative; as far as more money being taken out of your paycheck, to be the best cost money but the kids are our future; I would concentrate your effort in pressuring politicians in reigning in entitlements like medicare and social …   more ›
