Georgia Ellen Evans, 'The Hat Lady' of Avon United Methodist Church

Founder of the Avon Women's Club Nursery School

Georgia Ellen Evans (nee Brewster), of Avon, passed away Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012 at her home. Mrs. Evans was born on Feb. 18, 1927, in Youngstown, Ohio. She was the founder of the Avon Women's Club Nursery School and an active member of Avon United Methodist Church where she volunteered in many roles. Georgia was active in bible study, fundraising, women's fellowship, substitute organist, and a Sunday school superintendent and teacher. She will be remembered by fellow parishioners as "the lady who wore the hats." Georgia was musical and creative; she enjoyed playing the violin, french horn and piano. She also spent time painting, designing needlework creations and flower arranging. Georgia married her sweetheart, Jack Evans, in 1950. They …

The free event will feature face-painting, crafts, Christmas-themed games and prizes, a family picture station and a visit from Santa Claus. Kids need more quality time with Saint Nick? A Lorain County summer classic returns as the North Ridgeville Corn Festival is this weekend. There are rides, music, a 10K and 5K road race, a corn-eating contest, games, a cornhole tournament and a parade. Check out more than 80 artists and artisans at Saturday's Madison Avenue Arts Walk in Lakewood. Participating stores will offer discounts on products and classes. The need for food assistance has been rising in recent years. You can help by bringing a donation of non-perishable food to Sunday's Chicks Against Hunger Food Drive.
