LoCo Blue 2013: Pete Soto Chili Cook Off Grows

Cleveland Heights police, Columbus police organization join growing cook-off this year

An event born out of an accident that resulted in serious injuries to an Avon police officer is growing strong and entering its third year. Pete Soto, an Avon motorcyle officer was injured on duty in 2010 when a vehicle struck his bike. His fellow officers launched a chili cook off the following year a a fundraiser for him. In 2012, realizing that Lorain County lacked a foundation similar to Cleveland and Columbus, they founded Lorain County Blue to assist families of officers down or critically injured in the line of duty in Lorain County and continued the Pete Soto Chili Cook Off.  The event has grown since its inception and on Feb.  23, from 5 p.m. – 10 p.m., the Lorain County Blue Foundation will be hosting the third annual “Pete Soto …

Costco Takes on Avon Police and Fire Departments for Charity

Softball game being played to benefit UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital.

Costco Wholesale in Avon will be hosting and playing in a charity softball game against Avon’s fire and police departments at All Pro Freight Stadium at 7 p.m. Sept 29. General admission tickets are $5 each and parking is $1. All proceeds benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. Jim Smith, mayor of Avon, along with Mark Keen, Avon Costco Wholesale General Manager, will be throwing out the first pitches.   The Avon store is the first Costco Wholesale nationwide to hold a charity softball game to benefit its local Children’s Miracle Network hospital. Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals is a national nonprofit organization that provides structure and support to more than 170 …

Name of Avon Pair Taken by Life Flight Released

Man and woman in early 20s hit a semi-trailer last week.

The man and woman injured in a serious accident on 611 on June 27 have been identified as Avon residents and have both been released from the hospital. Avon police officer George Ruple identified the pair, who were transported by MetroHealth's LifeFlight after the accident, as Jessica Hellweg, 23, and Dustin Stephens, 22, both of Avon. Stephens was originally listed as from Mansfield, based on information on his driver’s license. He currently lives in Avon. Phyllis Marino, the Vice President of Marketing and Communications at MetroHealth System said Stephens was released from MetroHealth Medical Center last week. Stealing Pills Isn't Very Neighborly

The following arrest information was provided by the Avon Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A Carleen Avenue resident told Avon police on May 6 that she’d let someone from the neighborhood into her home that day and discovered, after the person had left, that close to 30 of  her oxycodone pills were missing. Someone attempted to break into Avon United Methodist Church sometime on or around May 8. There was some damage to the storm window on the southwest corner of the building. Police have no suspects.

Marijuana in Car Leads to Charges

The following arrest information was provided by the Avon Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A moment of bad driving proved costly to a man on April 30. Avon police spotted the man driving off the right side of Interstate 90 in the eastbound lanes around 8:46 p.m. After he was pulled over, the man was cited for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Avon police arrested a man for DUI near the intersection of Route 83 and Chester Road around 2:50 a.m. on April 27. David Hamilton, 22, was also cited for stopping in the roadway.

Avon Police Make Drug Arrest on I-90

The following arrest information was supplied by the Avon police department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A 29-year-old man was arrested after a traffic stop where police found 12 bundles of marijuana ready for sale. Taiwan Frazier, of E. 258th Street in Euclid, was spotted weaving from lane to lane in his gold Buick by an Avon police officer around 1:42 a.m. on June 5 while heading west on I-90 near exit 151. After Frazier was pulled over, police discovered his license was suspended, so the car was towed. The pot was found while the car was being inventoried after towing. Frazier was charged with drug abuse. Guns Are Not Toys Two boys were charged with criminal damaging by Avon police after a woman’s car window was shot out by a pellet or BB gun while she was driving in the 1100 block of Nagel Road around 7:38 p.m. on June 6. Avon police are participating in "Click It or Ticket"

If you're not wearing your seat belt while driving in Avon, you're not only risking your life and health, you're risking your bank account. The Avon Police Department is participating in the "Click It or Ticket" seat belt enforcement efforts through June 5. So, if you're pulled over and you're not wearing a seat belt, expect a ticket.  "No excuses and no exceptions," said a statement from the police department on Monday. Police will be paying special attention at night. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Commission, of the 11,593 people who died in nighttime car crashes in 2009, 62 percent were not wearing seat belts. Men and people in pickup trucks are the least likely to be wearing seat belts. Enforcement and education are …

Woman caught using fake identity to get prescription drugs

A car parked on the 36000 block of Detroit Road had a window smashed sometime before 7:19 p.m. on May 10. A GPS unit was stolen from the car. Nice Try A woman was arrested after trying to use a false identity to get prescription drugs at Westshore Primary Care. An employee called Avon police after the woman used the name of a former patient  at Westshore Primary Care to try and get a prescription. The employee recognized the name and knew that the former patient had moved out of Ohio.  Bonnie Holstein, 56, was charged with deception to obtain a dangerous drug.

Avon Police Help Catch Illegal Immigrant

Man was passenger in car pulled over in traffic stop

A traffic stop by Avon police led to the discovery of a suspected illegal immigrant. The officer made the stop on Interstate 90 near Timberlakes around 10:48 p.m. on May 12. A passenger in the car was first identified as a Fernando Gureic of Mexico. The officer called border patrol in Sandusky, who got someone there around 11:10 p.m.  The passenger was then correctly identified as Fernando Guittierez of Guatemala, and he was taken into custody by Border Patrol.  The driver of the car, who was not identified, was given a warning for assured cleared distance and marked lanes.

Trucker Spotted Watching Movie While Driving on I-90

Avon police pulled over a semi truck around 5:50 p.m. on Feb.10 after seeing the driver playing a movie on the dashboard DVD player while driving on Interstate 90. He was also not using his turn signal, police reported. Police issued a warning to the driver of the truck, which was registered out of New York, on paying attention. Impersonation Another out-of-state resident notified Avon Police that they received a phone call from someone from the "Department of Justice." This time, a woman in Massachusetts told police that the man identified himself as Mike Johnson and that he threatened her if she did not send a check to him for $12,000 for a "loan." The woman said she hangs up on him and has notified police in her community. The phone …
