Check out our interactive database to see how students in Avon and Avon Lake, and other local districts performed on the last Kindergarten Readiness Assessment-Literacy test.
Kindergarten students across the state are packing their book bags and smiling for first-day photos as they get ready to enter elementary school for the first time. For Avon the first full day of kindergarten is Aug. 27. In Avon Lake, kindergartners joined other students in the school district on Aug. 24. In Ohio, kindergarten students are given the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment-Literacy test, or KRA-L, to help teachers identify each student’s early reading skills. These tests are not the pass or fail type, and how well a school performs does not impact its state report card. The assessments for the 2010-2011 school year can be found above by district. The tests are used to help teachers know which students need more help and which are…

Dear Avon Residents, It is with a great deal of pride and excitement that I welcome everyone to the 2012-2013 school year. We are a district with a tradition of excellence and I look forward to working with everyone to ensure that continues. Teachers and administrators continue to work hard to align our curriculum with the Ohio Common Core Standards (English Language Arts and Mathematics) and the Ohio Department of Education State Standards (Science and Social Studies). The Common Core State Standards are intended to provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn so they can be successful in both college and their careers. Assessment is an important piece of the educational process and our staff continues …

Important: Parents, staff and students will need to adhere to new traffic patterns for North and South lots.
School starts Aug. 22 and Avon Lake High School will begin adopting new important temporary traffic patterns that need to be adhered to, including changes to the north and south lots. The North lot will change to two way traffic off of SR 83. The North lot will accommodate all drop-offs and pick-ups near the Performing Arts Center BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL. The South lot (senior parking) will be ENTRANCE ONLY in the mornings and EXIT ONLY in the afternoon (see below for details). Avon Lake officer Brian Hurd is asking student, parents and other drivers to have patience and use caution while the new patterns are enforced. Below is the TEMPORARY traffic pattern (unless otherwise noted) for entering/exiting the high school parking lots until …

As the first day of school gets closer, see how your local schools performed on last year’s state report card using our interactive search form.
For students entering middle school, the first day is more than new books and class assignments. It’s a time of physical, social and academic transition. So what are parents supposed to do to help students navigate this tumultuous time? Keep communicating and encourage students to get involved, local principals suggest. A 2011 study from the Program on Education Policy and Governance at Harvard University found that students in Florida experienced a significant drop in math and reading achievement when they entered middle school. The study’s authors address the study in an article for EducationNext. The database above includes all public middle schools for the Patch communities in Ohio. You can search for your local school to see how it …
Local principals point out some common pitfalls and share tips for parents and students.
For parents with students making the transition from an elementary school to a middle school, these next few weeks can be a challenging time. Students are becoming more independent, but parents still want to help. "I don't think the kids are as scared of middle school as the parents are," said Patrick Mc Nichols, principal at Roxboro Middle School in Cleveland Heights. The local principals who talked to Patch agree that parents should stay involved, but there are ways to help students spread their wings. Here are a few tips. Parents and teachers, add yours in the comments. Encourage students to get involved The biggest problem students face is trying to make connections socially and figuring out where they fit in, said Brecksville-…

Hi, Victor, I'm glad you raised your question, because you raise a misunderstanding that many people have, namely that all school levies put money into some sort of general fund that can be used in any way the district decides. In fact, this is actually a bond issue, not an operating levy. In this bond issue, the money raised goes exclusively to the proposed construction projects and cannot be …   more ›
