Belle Road Park Bathrooms Back on City Agenda

Residents can speak in favor of, or against, proposed bathrooms near Kopf Reservation at April 24 meeting.

A public meeting concerning whether to add bathrooms to Belle Road Park is back on the city agenda. Councilman Rob James said a public meeting will be held April 24 at 7 p.m. at the Lake House to discuss the issue. Whether action will be taken has not been decided James said. The city will eventually decide whether to add restrooms in Belle Road Park, which joins two wooded sections the 162-acre Kopf Reservation. The issue has detractors and supporters. In November, one person called the concept “kind of creepy.” At a Nov. 5 council meeting where more than a dozen detractors said they didn’t support bathrooms. Another detractor said the park did not generate enough traffic to warrant bathrooms. Other park goers support the idea of the …

BWNash, you have it all wrong, prove there is a need.. Walker Road Park has parking for over 120 cars and has a bathroom... and a covered picnic area and sporting fields.. that makes sense.. oh and it is over 60 acres.. lets contrast.. Belle Park is 3 acres adjacent to the 100 acre walking path.. a transit park.. where people pass through, not a destination.. there is no parking for the park, and…   more ›

Restroom in Belle Road Park Called 'Kind of Creepy'

Nearby residents tell council there is no need for bathrooms in Belle Road Park; supporters disagree.

Two years ago, when supporters of constructing a bathroom in Belle Road Park approached council, a group of residents from the area voiced their concerns and the issue was tabled. Now, council will decide whether the issue needs to be re-explored. Almost a dozen residents, many from Belle Road, told council on Nov. 5 they did not want the proposed bathrooms, the size of a two-car garage, in the park, which joins two wooded sections of Kopf Reservation. “My personal preference is to not have a toilet across the street,” one resident said. “It’s going to increase traffic.” Residents James and Jeannie Waddell said there is no need. They have offered their home’s facilities to park visitors and said no one has ever taken them up on the offer…

I think the Restroom would help. I enjoy riding my bike along the path and would head to the Belle road park more often if I knew there were restrooms. I also know that the Metro Parks have planned activities. They could possibly use the park more often if the restroom services were there.   more ›

Group Says Bathroom in Avon Lake Park is a 'Sanitary Issue'

Bathrooms in Kopf Reservation tabled in 2010.

Two years after Avon Lake City Council tabled plans to build a restroom in Belle Road Park, a group is hoping to resurrect plans, albeit in a slightly different area. In 2010, residents living on Armour and Belle roads near the 3-acre park objected to plans to build a restroom there, saying it could invite vandalism, sex and bring undesirables to the area, which is near a residential area. The park, although city property, is part of the Kopf Family Reservation (formerly Save the Woods), a sprawling 162-acre passive park with three and a half miles of trails. Dedicated in 2008 as a county metropark, it is one of only a few Lorain County Metro Parks that does not have a restroom.   Restroom supporters, including Jan Van Wagner and Terry and…

It's easy to say put the bathroom in... it appears to not cost anybody anything, but that is not exactly true. The city will have to provide the hookup to the sewer and water and power and likely gas, since it is said it will be open year around. Also people forget that if we add a structure the Police have to be able to do a drive by to patrol it.. with the artist rendering of a fence around it …   more ›
