One hour concert, reception is open to the public.
After 36 years, Avon Lake High School choral director Bill Zurkey conducted his last concert Thursday night in the school’s PAC. While the night proved to be a memorable one for Zurkey, his family, performers and guests, one last surprise remained: Plans were announced for a farewell concert, "The End of an Era," on Sunday, May 18, at 1 p.m. in the Avon Lake High School Performing Arts Center (PAC). Former and current students, school personnel and those who may have become acquainted with Zurkey, who was recently honored by Bowling Green State University as a 2013 College Alumni Award Recipients, are invited to come by, hear the concert and join the reception. Avon Lake High School chorale director William Zurkey was honored by Bowling Green State University as a 2013 College Alumni Award Recipients the weekend of March 4. Zurkey was one of six recipients honored as an outstanding, notable and accomplished alumni. Zurkey, a graduate of the College of Music, has been director of choral activities at Avon Lake High School for the past 26 years. He earned his bachelor of Music Education degree from the university. He also holds a Master of Music degree from Cleveland State University and has completed work in doctoral studies at Kent State University. Zach Brady is one of only 200 selected to perform in Columbus.
Avon Lake’s Zachary Brady is one of only 200 high school singers selected for the All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir, performing now through Aug. 5 at the Ohio State Fair. After the choir converged at the Ohio State Expo Center in Columbus on July 19, members spent five days rehearsing before the official opening of the 157th Ohio State Fair on July 25. On each day of the fair, the Choir will sing for some 60,000 fairgoers, performing at six to eight sites on the 260-acre fairgrounds, totaling more than 100 performances during the course of the fair. Looking to put a little holiday spirit into your week? We have two great performances for you to put you into the holiday mood. ALHS Holiday Concert The Avon Lake High School choirs will present a Holiday Concert on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Daniel B. Ross PhD Performing Arts Center Auditorium at Avon Lake High School. The choirs will perform a variety of seasonal favorites under the direction of William Zurkey. Performing groups include the Merples, Men’s and Women’s Chorus, Da Cantari, Barbieshop, and Chorale. The concert will close with the traditional O Holy Night. Mr. Zurkey changes lives by inspiring his students to genuinely care about the music they make. There are many directors, but not many directors who have this special ability. One would be hard pressed to find a Chorale alumna who doesn't look back upon those days with a warm heart, no matter where he or she is now.   more ›
