Help and Hope For The Deaf: Area Couple Says Assistance Still Needed

Bill and Bev Stives learn of hope and need in Haiti and the Dominican Republic

After more than a decade of medical mission trips to impoverished villages in the Dominican Republic, Bill and Bev Stives consider those they help to be like family. “At first you see the poverty; now we see the people,” Bev said. “They are like extended family.” Bill Stives, a longtime pharmacist who retired from the Avon Lake Discount Drug Mart, and his wife Bev, who often performs as clown Daffy Dill, work alongside Dominicans, Americans and Canadians visiting different villages during their two to three-week stays. The self-funded trips are organized through Medical Ministry International. The Avon Lake couple stays at locations where living conditions are “less than desirable” and spend hours on buses traveling through rough terrain …
