Feb. 2 event will focus on peaceful solutions
Every seven minutes a child is bullied and 85 percent of them receive no intervention, according to the office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. The Avon Lake Early Childhood P.T.A. (ALECPTA) is sponsoring a Bully Proofing Your Child workshop for area parents and children, hoping to have an effect on bullying. Three principals mail letters home to parents urging them to check Facebook accounts after repeated instances of off-campus cyberbullying.
The story Troy Intermediate Principal Kelli Cogan tells is heartbreaking. “I had a student’s parents call me and tell us their child was acting withdrawn and sullen,” Cogan, who heads the school of fifth and sixth-graders, said. “We had the student talk to a counselor and found out the child was afraid to come to school because of something on Facebook.” She asked the student what the problem was. “Everybody hates me,” the child told Cogan. “You know how kids are, saying things like that,” Cogan said. “So I told (the child), ‘Everyone doesn’t hate you.’” “Well, 82 percent do,” the student replied. Cogan learned a classmate had created a Facebook poll asking if they liked the student and 82 percent had replied, “no.” That poll included …

Alexandria Nichols resignation letter cites pay inequity and city's failure to 'cease bullying by a council member.'
Just what, if anything, an Avon Lake councilman might have done to cause the city’s former recreation director to cite “bullying” in her resignation letter may never be known. The former city department head, Alexandria Nichols, is not saying. And although Nichols said the city has documentation of her allegations, the city says it does not. On Jan. 13, Recreation Director Alexandria Nichols submitted her resignation to Mayor K. C. Zuber. While the letter did not specify a reason for leaving, it did say that an otherwise positive employment was …
