New Key Bank Branch Meets Energy, Environment Certification

Avon’s newest bank opening Jan. 28

KeyBank’s newest branch, slated to open in Avon on Monday, Jan. 28 was built with energy savings in mind. The 3,900-square foot, freestanding branch, located at 36019 Detroit Road in Avon (on the corner of Detroit Road and SR 83) replaces a smaller branch that was located in the Avon Commons shopping plaza. The new branch was built from the ground up for LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification, the third branch of its kind for Key in Northeast Ohio (and sixth in Ohio). Key’s offices at the Higbee Building and Key Tower in downtown Cleveland, as well as its Tiedemann Road building in Cleveland, all achieved LEED certification. “Key is committed to constructing ‘sustainable’ buildings whenever possible,” Lisa Oliver…

Nice press release, Key Bank. But I'm far more concerned with how you will impact the already heavy traffic where super-sized Center Road and an engorged Detroit Rd. pump thousands of cars daily through a sclerotic arterial intersection. You've built, on a too-small footprint, a driveway traffic-trap right atop one of the busier intersections in Northern Ohio. In so doing, you've created the …   more ›

Opening Is Grand for Chevrolet Dealer

Joe Firment Chevrolet settles in at new home on Chester Road.

There's a Chevrolet dealership that's new to Avon, but not to Lorain County. And business has gotten off to a quick start. Joe Firment Chevrolet opened its doors in a shiny new facility on Chester Road in Avon on Sept. 10, leaving its Lorain home after 31-plus years. The Firment family made the move with mixed emotions.  "Very sad," said co-vice president Jim Firment, who runs the dealership with his brother Paul. "Our family was there for a long, long time. It was considered our home. And to move out of there, I gotta tell you, it was kind of sad." "Now that we're here it's very exciting to be here in a new store," Firment said. "Everything is brand new, it is so nice." The showroom still has that "new car" smell – in part because it's …

PetPeople Opens in City Centre Today

Healthy options for pets is the store's theme

The ASPCA reports that 62 percent of American households have a pet. To provide the basics for a dog or cat -- that's food, medical care, training and other supplies -- owners spend between $600 and $900 per year. And that doesn't include the chew toys, treats and other indulgences. You now have a new place to find much of that. PetPeople opens its new store in City Centre, next to Marc's, on Thursday morning. This is the 14th PetPeople store. PetPeople specializes in natural pet foods and healthy products for pets. Manager Matt Horowitz described it as a "neighborhood pet store." "We're passionate about educating our associates so they can help customers make the best choices for their pet," Horowitz said. "They're not just guessing." …

Black Friday Brings Mixed Bag of Sales for Area Stores

Some stores see increase in business, and some don't.

For area businesses big and small, this year’s day-after Thanksgiving sale event was a tale of two Fridays. Wal-Mart in Avon was so busy between 10 p.m. and midnight on Thursday, they stopped letting people in to avoid violating the fire code, said zone supervisor Anna, who refused to give her last name. “We were only letting people in as other people left,” Anna said. Mindi Ellison, who co-owns an Elyria-based food cart called The Shak, set up shop at Best Buy in Avon to feed the huge lines. “At one point, the line stretched all the way around to the back of the building, and was spilling out into the parking lot,” she said. “We did good, but we thought it would bring more business for us.” Managers at Best Buy were not available for …
