Mary Pajak, Citizen of the Year, Takes on Flowers and Bullies

Pajak honored Citizen of the year for involvement in cable and Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club.

Mary Pajak was named Avon Lake’s 2013 Citizen of the Year for her significant involvement in, and dedication to, the community. “Mary Pajak has served this community with true dedication to the residents and to supporting civic organizations in Avon Lake,” Marty O’Donnell, President of the Avon Lake Community Council, who selected Pajak, said. As an active member of the Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club since 1993, Pajak continues to work endlessly in promoting community-wide involvement in conservation, civic planting, outreach and many other projects. Avon Lake Community Cable Stations Threatened

Avon Lake’s community television stations are being threatened by a state law that could potentially eliminate local access, including the city’s PEG (public, education and government) channels. The city’s Cable Access Manager, Fran Fisher, is urging residents concerned about losing PEG stations to contact Congresswoman Betty Sutton. On May 5 the federal Community Access Preservation Act (CAP Act), H.R. 1746 was introduced by Congresswoman Baldwin (D‐WI) and Congressman LaTourette (R‐OH). On May 23, Avon Lake Council introduced legislation in support of the resolution. The federal bill was introduced to counter state cable laws that went into effect several years ago in 20 states. The cable association is, as usual, wrong or just plain mendacious. The Community Access Preservation Act (CAP Act--HR 1746) does not create a "new" franchising authority. Cable franchising in OH will still remain at the state level. Nor does it override state franchising. It preserves and protects PEG access television in the local community.
