Avon, Avon Lake Schools to Get More Than 75K Each in Casino Taxes This Month

Schools will be receiving the first set of casino tax payments in January.

Avon and Avon Lake school disricts will soon receive more than $75,000 each in taxes from the state’s new casinos.  Figures for this first set of payments were released earlier this week. The Plain Dealer reports that the state is passing out more than $37.9 million in casino taxes to schools and districts across Ohio. Schools will receive their payments—based on enrollment—in January and August each year.  Check out the Plain Dealer article for more information on how the casino taxes are divided between schools, cities and more.  The Avon Lake School District will receive $78,680.91, and the Avon Local School Distict will receive $87,297.74 according to information on the Ohio Department of Taxation's website. That's 1% of the annual revenue the district lost from GenOn's closing and the state tax cuts to local industry. If you think making up 1% of the budget deficit is enough to offset the losses, then we don't need another levy. Otherwise, accept that there will be significant cuts to what the district can offer its kids (class size, programs, etc.)   more ›
