Snapshot: Hot Chocolate, Warm December Day

One local youth capitalizes on warm weather and the Christmas spirit.

Ten-year-old Gavin of Avon Lake channels his inner entrepreneur and finds a way to capitalize on an unseasonably warm December day. Patch's camera caught him (after doing a double take) after he set up a hot chocolate stand on Electric Boulevard, donned a Santa hat and began selling to passers-by on Dec. 1. Temperatures neared 60 degrees on Saturday.

What Did You Get for Christmas?

Tell us - or show us - what ol' Mr. Claus left under the tree for you this year!

Well, Merry Christmas everyone. Chances are you've already had that minor moment of judgment as you come down the stairs or around the hall and see what's under the Christmas tree, and you know for sure whether you were naughty or nice. Now that that's over, what did you get? Upload a picture of the big one this year, whether it's as small as a bag of coffee beans from Caribou Coffee, or as big as an engagement ring. I'll go first.

Christmas Countdown: Five Things

Are you holly-jolly yet?

If you've put off getting your Christmas tree, there's still time and plenty of options around Avon and Lorain County. Avon City Council will meet for a work session at 7:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall. One of the topics up for discussion will be a plan for "Bulk Week" for picking up recyclables, bulk waste and yard waste. If you have a library book do this week, get it to the Avon Branch Library by Friday. It's closed Saturday through Dec. 27. There will also be no Bookmobile service. Even after Saturday's snow, the odds are not looking good for a white Christmas. Temperatures go into the 40s for the middle of the week with rain in the forecast for Wednesday. No precipitation is forecast yet for the weekend. Are you running a lot of last …

Holiday Traditions Live On: Moms Talk

What are your must-do's for the holiday season?

From the Feast of the Seven Fishes to special Christmas pajamas to black-eyed peas on New Year's Day, the holiday season is filled with traditions. Traditions and rituals are an important part of holidays. They connect us with memories of the past, and give the children a legacy of memories of their own. Some of my favorite Christmas traditions were walking with my family in the pine woods at Abbey of Regina Laudis in Bethlehem, Conn., to choose a tree. We also went to Bethlehem to mail our Christmas cards. Not only would they have the Bethlehem postmark, but the post office has special "Christmas Town" ink stamps to decorate the envelopes of your cards. Since I moved to Ohio, I've heard of local traditions like going to see Santa at Halle…

My dad's mom (still around, just turned 99 in November yay!) would come over for Christmas dinner. My mom's parents usually went to one of her siblings' homes which were closer, so we'd go see them the day after Christmas.   more ›
