Annual tradition comes to an end; mayor seeks to continue and expand new tradition.
The lights have dimmed on an annual Avon Lake tradition. “Light Up The Park,” which featured complimentary hot chocolate, a DJ, and Santa and Mrs. Claus arriving by fire truck to Bleser Park which was lit up with holiday lights by night’s end, has been put on an indefinite hiatus. Mayor Greg Zilka said the city will refocus on touring holiday displays locally. “In year’s past, the reaction from adults and children when the lights were turned on was underwhelming,” Zilka said. He said the reaction from some attendees was, “Is this all there is?” “We have far more impressive displays around the community,” Zilka said. Popular guitarist, rec director and others will sing Dec. 13.
Avon Lake Recreation Department will be showcasing one of the most popular performers in Northeast Ohio as the featured act at the Dec. 13 Open Mic. In demand in local clubs, restaurants and wineries, Jeff Sherman will be featured for a half-hour as part of the monthly open mic night at the Old Firehouse Community Center. Sherman is one of the most sought after musicians in Northeast Ohio and combines classic rock and folk and blues. His playlist ranges from Bob Seger, The Grateful Dead and Jimmy Buffet to Carole King and Patsy Kline. Company specializes in specializes in Russian Vaganova Ballet.
A new dance company that recently opened up in Avon is hosting its inaugural performance, The Nutcracker, on Dec. 8 at the Avon Ballroom. The performance features students from ages 4 to 13. The Lakeshore DreamDance Company, which specializes in Russian Vaganova Ballet, has been operating out of the Avon Ballroom in Chester Square since late last summer. “We are the first company training this method since Cleveland Ballet and Marquerite Duncan closed,” owner Leisa Mullins said. Mullins, who studied at the Marquerite Duncan School of Dance, said the dance will feature 20 performers, including Mullins’ two sets of twins, ages 8 and 7, who she said were her “inspiration” for starting the company. Three days of events will start the holiday season in Avon.
Avon’s Candlelite Walk, a perennial favorite holiday tradition, is scheduled for Nov. 30 – Dec. 2 this year. ALHS Holiday Concert The Avon Lake High School choirs will present a Holiday Concert on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Daniel B. Ross PhD Performing Arts Center Auditorium at Avon Lake High School. The choirs will perform a variety of seasonal favorites under the direction of William Zurkey. Avon Lake’s annual Light Up The Park festival is Sunday, Dec. 4 at the Bleser Park Pavilion A. Join hundreds of others who enjoy this free, family-friendly gathering as the mayor “throws the switch” and tens of thousands of holiday lights light up the park. The festival, which runs from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., includes games, crafts, a DJ and complimentary hot chocolate and cookies also features a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. Bleser Park will remain lit through the remainder of the holiday season. This event is open to the public. My kids looked forward to seeing SANTA coming on the fire truck!! they thought is was the best part. Everyday we drive by and they say why isnt santa coming this year.? what do you tell them? And for the tour not many ppl have the money to spend for it. Thats why as a family we enjoyed the park together!!   more ›
