New Avon Parents' Rare Chance: Watch Egg Fertilize, Grow with 'Amazing Technology'

Marks use new Cleveland Clinic technology as almost real-time development of splitting egg is captured on video.

One Avon mother is doubly-blessed this Mother's Day and has a rare story to tell: Caroline Marks and her husband Ed are celebrating Caroline’s first year as a mother—of twins no less—and the couple was able to actually witness their children's conception and first five days of formation. The Marks were one of the first couples ever to take advantage of a new technology, the EmbryoScope, to watch as Caroline’s fertilized eggs were first fertilized, and then developed before being implanted. The couple used the assistance of the Cleveland Clinic's Fertility Center, now one of 10 labs in the country, and the first in Ohio, with the EmbryoScope -- technology used to monitor embryo development from conception to time of the transfer. The device…

Avon Lake Resident Finds New Career Through JVS

William Benedict and three of his peers earned their phlebotomy certifications with the help of Lorain's Joint Vocational School.

Lorain County has four new phlebotomists thanks in part to the Joint Vocational School (JVS) Adult Career Center. Christopher Phillips, of Collins, William Benedict, of Avon Lake, Cory Zillyett, of Amherst and Coleen Thompson, of Amherst, were the proud recipients of the certifications, according to JVS public relations specialist Tina Salyer. Phillips completed a phlebotomy internship at Fisher-Titus Hospital, while Benedict, Thompson and Zillyett completed internships at Cleveland Clinic facilities, said Salyer. “This was an exceptional group of students,” program instructor Nancy Smith said in a prepared statement. “They all brought knowledge and skills from previous jobs and from life experiences, and they learned from each other. They…

Avon Lake Mayor Meets With Clinic Officials Over Helicopter Disturbances

Mayor discounts "regular 4:30 p.m. flight" over the city.

Responding to concerns that Cleveland Clinic helicopters were causing disturbances to residents in Avon Lake, Avon Lake Mayor Greg Zilka met with Clinic administrators this month to discuss the issue. The Cleveland Clinic's Richard E. Jacobs Health Center, located in Avon, opened an emergency room on Sept. 5 that included a helipad for transporting patients. Zilka said he met with staff members at the Clinic on Jan. 8 to discuss flight times and paths. “The (designated) flight path is along I-90 as patients are transferred to Cleveland,” Zilka said. Zilka said he had heard complaints from residents of a regular 4:30 p.m. flight over Avon Lake. “Records do not show a regular or even intermittent flights at that time,” Zilka said. The …

What's so bad about the sound of a helicopter anyway!!. I like the sound of it. Some people have no life and just sit around and try to start problems. Go live in the country and stay away from people if the community is to much for you.   more ›

I-90 Nagel Interchange Opening By End of Month

Project opens nine months ahead of schedule.

The long awaited I-90 / Nagel Road interchange is expected to open at the end of December, Project Manager Don Damyanic and Mayor Jim Smith confirmed today. “We’ll know about 72 hours ahead of time,” Smith said of the opening, which is 9 months ahead of schedule. “It’s a moving target; the weather has a lot to do with it.” Damyanic announced earlier this week that three roads would re-open tomorrow, Dec. 5. “All of the paving and striping is now complete,” Damyanic said. “What is left are traffic signals, lights, signs, and some safety items. We have had to wait on First Energy to complete some work as their forces are thinned as many workers are still on the east coast after the hurricane.” Smith said the opening will most likely include …

Thanks Lori, The Patch, you and your team at the Patch Rock! I enjoy reading what is happening in Avon and reading the comments; it is a great stress reliever during my travels. I am in awe of your dedication to local news and the amount of time it takes to organize the Patch for what I assume is little pay.   more ›

Men Can Get Breast Cancer Too, Say Cleveland Clinic, UH Specialists

Men are particularly at risk if the breast cancer gene (BRCA2) runs in their family.

The focus of Breast Cancer Awareness efforts are focused on women -- the ribbons are pink, after all. But men can get breast cancer too. Patch sat down with a few local experts about male breast cancer:    Patch: Why is it important to talk about male breast cancer? Dr. Lee: It's important because men don't think they can get breast cancer. They don't think they can receive a mammogram screening. The discussion should be focused on breaking the myths and informing people on what is fact versus fiction. Men will say to me “men can't get breast cancer.” So they tend to show up late, when the lump has been there for several months, which is usually stage 2 or later. And that means that it has already spread to the lymph nodes because they …

Richard E. Jacobs Health Center Hosts Open House

New Cleveland Clinic facility to open Dec. 12

Avon got a sneak peek at the new Richard E. Jacobs Health Center over the weekend as the Cleveland Clinic hosted an open house. After two years of planning, medical director Dr. Joseph Knapp was thrilled to be another step closer to opening. "To see this place full of life, it's an amazing feeling," he said. There was food and gifts being given out all over as guests toured the offices, waiting areas, exam rooms and other parts of the building. Visitors got to see the physical therapy area on the ground floor, which looks out to the south towards Interstate 90, with its aquatic therapy pools. An emergency helicopter and ambulance were in the back parking lot for visitors to see. The open house was a popular attraction, as traffic streamed …

Cleveland Clinic Avon Facility Taking Shape Inside

Medical director Dr. Joseph Knapp gives a tour of the Richard E. Jacobs Health Center

Less than a month from now, the new Richard E. Jacobs Health Center will open in Avon. The facility, off Nagel Road just north of Interstate 90, will open Dec. 12. Between the medical offices, treatment rooms, surgical area, emergency room and all its other facilities, the building is 190,000 square feet. The emergency room will not open until after the Nagel Road interchange is completed. About 400 people will work there. Dr. Joseph Knapp, medical director of the center, gave a tour last week to local media. He pointed out details like the orthopedic department being on the first floor so patients would not have to walk far, and that check-in and check-out areas are separate to help ensure better communication and patient confidentiality…
