From Stephen Beard:  "It's so hot in Avon, they're changing the city's name from AVON to NOVA. The joke being that a nova explosion occurs at around 20 million degrees kelvin --- pretty frickin' hot." Two from Grant McCarthy: "It's so hot in Avon, the ice cream man is handing out straws with all of his products!" And "It's so hot in Avon that the cacti are heading north in search of cooler temps!" Winner Chosen in "It's So Hot in Avon..." Contest

Thanks to all who submitted!

Thanks for all the wonderful, witty and whimsical entries in the "How Hot is It?" contest! With the summer heat reaching near-record temperatures last week, we gave you a place to vent about the heat. People used everything from pop culture to food to news to make their point. And while there was some good-natured grousing, not one person wrote about missing winter. It was hard to choose a winner, but it had to be done. And the winner is... Maryjane Edgar! Her response to "It's so hot in Avon" was "My hot flashes cool me down." Simple, evocative and something many can relate to. Congratulations, Maryjane! You get a $25 Caribou Coffee gift card! Email me at melissa.hebert@patch.com and we can make arrangements to get you your prize. Thanks …

Avon Lake Scavenger Hunt Aims for Cleaner Lake Erie

City sponsoring contest to locate 6 stormwaters banners located at local businesses.

With the warmer weather comes the inevitable: Car washing, cleaning out the garage and basement. City Engineering Manager Joe Reitz knows it’s tempting to dump old gasoline, paint down the sewer in the street, or let the runoff from cleaning your car with harsh detergents flow down the drain. He’s hoping a scavenger hunt will help raise awareness that dumping in the storm sewers in streets will only result in polluted creeks, harming the wildlife that call them home. That same water will eventually drain into Lake Erie, harming fish and other creatures that call the great lake home. Reitz is using Avon Lake’s “AL the Alligator” to help residents get the message about managing the city’s valuable water resources, like Lake Erie, through …
