City's most winning football coach will be honored at Ahern's event.
One of Avon Lake’s most celebrated coaches will be honored in June. The event on June 22 will also be a reunion of sorts for former Shoremen who want to thank Dave Dlugosz, the program’s most-winning football coach who retired this year after 21 seasons. The event, held at Ahern’s Banquet Center in Avon Lake will honor Dlugosz, who over the years accumulated a host of records and awards, including one state championship for the Avon Lake High School football team. “Coach Dlugosz is the kind of leader you just don’t replace,” ALHS Athletic Director Tom Barone said. “We will have a new head coach on the sidelines next fall but Coach Dlugosz’s commitment and dedication to our Shoremen Football program will not be forgotten.” Long-time …

Replaces Dave Dlugosz, who retired last year
Former Avon Lake High School assistant football coach Larry Laird was approved as football coach by the Avon Lake Board of Education Jan. 8. He is replacing 21-year coach Dave Dlugosz, who retired in 2012 after winning 200 football games. “He left a couple of years ago to (be the head coach at) Medina and did a fine job down there,” Avon Lake Superintendent of Schools Bob Scott said. Laird, 44, became the Medina High School head football coach in 2010, leading the Battling Bees to a 9-3 record before returning to Avon Lake. Avon Lake football coach and Hall of Famer Dave Dlugosz is retiring. Dlugosz, who earned his 200th coaching victory this past season against Amherst, has collected a host of awards and accomplishments during his career. In 2003, his Shoremen won the Div. II state championship. He accumulated a record of 200-44, and earned won 18 Southwestern Conference championships, including 15 of the last 16 years. “Twenty-two years as a head coach is a long time, and that’s essentially what it came down to,” Dlugosz told the Chronicle-Telegram. “We still have some very qualified guys on our coaching staff to carry on what has happened at Avon Lake, year after year. School board members say move will save district money.
Two of Avon Lake’s longest-standing high school teachers are hoping to retire from the school district this year and then be rehired for the 2012-13 year. School district officials are saying the move will save the school district money. The district held a public input meeting May 8 to allow for comments and give the board an opportunity to explain the situation. Dave Dlugosz is a health/physical education teacher and the high school’s head football coach. Superintendent of Schools Bob Scott said Dlugosz, who was hired on Sept. 1, 1974, wants to retire as a teacher but be rehired again as the head football coach.
